True dat.... By the way, I hope someone paid for my kids lunch today...kwillia said:I don't know... I've been in a meeting most of the morning and have some catching up to do. I wouldn't want to dole it out prematurely as it's possible one of the Geek Island treads have stepped up to the the plate.
Check and balances, Beaky... checks and balances.Inkpen said:But in some dark corners of the village, danger lurks..
The parents need to be responsible and not rely on the village to care for their child.

I got my kids, thanks....This_person said:A blind eye to everyone else's kids is bad for everyone. Hurts your kids, you hurt others. A parent has the ultimate responsibility, but as adults we all have the responsibility to enforce community standards.

As a kid, if one of us ( my siblings and me) did something wrong, mom knew about it as soon as we came in the house!!
Called "Early Warning System of neighborhood moms looking out kitchen window watching all the kids to be sure they were OK telephone network."
And it was great to know someone was watching us to be sure we were safe.
That was in the 60's and I do it too..watch kids to make sure all are OK.
I, Beaky, agree with kwillia... it DOES take a village!

My brother and I were talking on the phone last night.. and the disussion went to neighborhood in Portsmouth NH that we spent a few years in. How we NEVER stayed indoors. All the kids were outside playing in the street, in the ball parks, where ever.. but we were ALWAYS outside, and if you weren't outside by about 9AM on Saturday kids were knocking on our door.Inkpen said:So true.!!

Everyone's parents watched us.. my parents didn't watch just me, but all the parents somewhat kept track of us. I don't know how many times my parents laid in ambush waiting for me to come in the house at night (had to be in when the street lights came on) because mrs so & so on the next street up saw me throwing rocks..
We had our share of getting hurt, and I spent more then my fair share in the ER, (even came to underneath a VW Bug one time) but man what a cool way to grow up!!

This_person said:Absolutely nothing. The question was whether teachers should be able to teach with minimum support from parents, and my opinion was that there are a good number of teachers who can't or won't teach even with full support from parents. My point was that it's a parent's responsibility to see to it that their kids learn. Unfortunately, a good number of teachers feel that it's ONLY the parent's responsibility, because they have an almost infinite number of excuses why it's not their responsibility. A good parent has to stand up and ensure their kids get what they need, because no one else will.
Yeah they are, we just get to hear about EVERY single horror story now as it happens.mainman said:Its not all what they have in their room... Things are not the same as they were when I was a kid...

Kids were getting kidnapped in the 60's and the 70's and the 80's... probably before that even (hence the name KIDnapped).
Little boys and girls were getting molested.. and not only by priests and Michael Jackson.
What happened in Michigan (for example) never much made it past the local or state news, a single kidnapping, a single child getting molested, we never heard of it, what we did hear were the REAL bad ones. Multiple bodies in the back yard, twenty years of kidnapping abusing and killing children.... now a woman gets a hangnail in Korea we can read about it as she's getting it lanced, or go to youtube and see the video of the puss running down here finger.
For example.. the kid in Florida that escaped? 20 years ago we would never have known about it.
