Thats the thing, THE ROADS WERE CLEAR!!! You see one flake and its "OH MY GOD SHUT DOWN THE COUNTY!!!" Come on, are you that afraid of snow? What ever happend to 2 hours late? Now I'm looking at my yard, looking at the patches of mud and snow because its ALL MELTING! The roads are dry. I have a good idea, lets shut down the schools when it rains too! EXCELLENT!

I don't think that it has anything to do with people being scared of the snow, as it does taking precautions at every measure. The mains roads were clear this morning, but the side roads which school buses travel were icy and dangerous. Yes, school could have been delayed for 2 hours like Calvert County was. But when the decision is made to close the schools down, it is with the best intentions for the saftey of our children, and other people on the road. I'm from Caribou Maine, and this snow in St. Mary's isn't anything compared to what I've seen there. But Maine is equipt for heavy snows with their sand and machinery, because Maine is use to heavy snow falls. Maine use to keep their schools open even with a foot of snow. Kids HATE that!

do you really feel like our schools are free babysitters?[/I] Because my son learns various subjects such as reading, writing, math and science just a few.

I guess its just strange to me because it really wasn't that bad here and I hadn't really thought about the little pockets of places that have no sun.

I remember in my day, when I was a young las, whe had to very little snow days. The bus came when there was snow on the roads. I guess its a different world these days...

Yea, and when I was growing up in Colorado, there was no such thing as a snow day.

Why shut down for the whole day? The roads are clear, they have been since 8am. Why not open 2 hours late? Good thing I didn't have to work today! This is the second unecessary "snow" day of the school calendar. It just burns me up.

:banghead:

I seldom post on here but this thread hit a nerve. I worked in school district transportation for years and part of that time I was the person out at all hours of the night checking roads and determining whether or not to call a snow day. I don't know the size of st mary's county school district but I can tell you that your immediate area is in no way indicative of the whole district. Considering first, the nature of the cargo and second, our litigious society, it is best to be conservative in these calls. Heck, putting a parent out because they have to figure out day care is a much better alternative than a bus load of upset children (in the case of an accident) or worse, an injury or death.

The bottom line is that the district can never please everyone. Their job is to keep our children safe, not worry about your daycare situation.

you could always run for president of the BOE. Then send 'em off to school on a morning like today, and i'm sure you'd get lots of calls from parents thanking you for sending their lil ones out on the roads. you could then tell 'em f you, toughen up, just think of the long summer they'd have.

:lmao::doh: HA! sounds like a plan! (joking)

I was being sarcastic you nitwhit. based on this:

Really I'm just happy I didn't have to work today because that would be one more day I didn't get paid for because I had nobody to watch my child.

you're the one that implies that your just upset about schools being closed because it might have cost you a day of work since you had "nobody to watch your child"

Right, I guess it wouldn't be as cost effective for St. Mary's Co.

You would be the first one to sue the school system if anything happened to your lil ones. But yet you sit here and biatch because they tried to make them safe

Why are the schoold... 02-14-2008 01:13 PM Not wanting the kids to miss out on school does not mean the poster would sue. Do you have some extra knowledge of morningbell's legal history?

No you missed what I wrote, she would be the one jumping up and down because they didn't close the schools for that 2 inches of snow, and her child was hurt on the way to school.
