Win 7 vs Win XP

We have to buy a new computer and my husband found one that has Windows 7 already loaded. We don't want Windows 7, we want XP. Can Win 7 be unloaded so we can upload XP? Neither of us are very computer savvy so if it's not a simple procedure, we're screwed. TIA

In many cases, if the computer comes pre-loaded with Win7, there may not be Win XP drivers for it. You would have to pick a specific mode and hit the vendor website to see if XP is supported and drivers available.

That said, there really is no reason NOT to get Win7. It is far better and more stable than XP. Takes a little getting used to, but worth it.

True. Our main worry was whether or not Verizon DSL would work with Win 7 and I just checked and we're good. It works. The only downside is that my husband's games won't work with Win 7 but I'm sure he'll just use that as an excuse to go out and get new ones.

If the DSL is already up and running, no issues. I'm running Win7 on DSL right now.

As far as the games, Win7 has backward compatibility modes to allow older software to run as if it was on an XP system.

Also should mention that the End of Life of XP SP3 is almost here, and there will no longer be any patches or support after that. EoL just occurred for Win XP SP2, so anyone with SP2 won't get patches and updates now.

My husband emailed me a few minutes ago and said he talked to his office computer guy and he said the same thing.

Got Win7 and Verizon DSL. Works fine. Haven't found a game yet that it won't play.

:yay:

Have him right click on the game shortcut after he installs the game... click on 'compatabilty' tab.... set to 'NT' and 'run as administrator'.

I have a bunch of older games and they all run great on my Win 7 system.... I even have some hacks to get better resolution out of some of the older games. :)

Pour company is still using XP.
We just got new quad core workstations running XP64

:lmao:

I have an 'older' workstation, quad Xeon 3GHz w/ 16Gb of Ram... just installed Win 7 on it and it runs MUCH more stably than it did with XP Pro.

Most of our users though have oldies, we even still have a couple PIII 500MHz machines running XP, but hey, if the users only use em to check email, why does it matter? I do SolidWorks on mine, so I need something powerful... most people don't, truth be told.

everything work out? Ive had some old and new games initially not working on W7 32bit but once ran in compatibility mode it runs fine. Not the same story if your running on W7 64bit edition, but usually resolved by running in compatibility mode. Last resort would be to go to the gaming forum of that game and surely someone else has ran into the same problem already.
If anything W7 would improve gaming as you can finally take advantage of the RAM on your computer (remember, everything runs faster from RAM than your mechanical hard drive) as Windows XP (32x) is only limited to seeing 3.25Gigabytes of memory. And if your'e taking advantage of solid state drives, then you already know how fast everything improves, specially on W7.
laptop im on now runs on W7 64x and sees all 6gb RAM. And if youre not into getting over the W7 look so fast, you can disable themes and make it look dang near like XP did (Administrative Tools > Services > right click Themes and Stop) (Right click Computer>Properties>Advanced System Settings> in the Advanced Tab select Settings from the Performance section> and select the "Adjust Best Performance" radio button.

every game I played under XP and x64 XP ( masochist I know) run fine under x64 7 Ultimate

what games does he play specifically ... old 16 bit DOS games will not run, but he should be playing those in Dos Box anyhow

most of my games are bought through Steam

So far, one game loaded ok, one did not. The one that didn't is Railroad Tycoon. Says it only works with Win 95 or 98. His games are pretty old so it just might be that he needs a newer version of the game.

I do have another question though. When we turn the computer on, it prompts us to use a password. How do we remove that so we don't have to enter the password each time we turn it on?

Glad you like W7, it takes a little getting used to it but it really is great.

Vista was the Windows OS that people were retrograding back to XP, Microsoft blew it on that version of the Windows OS, it had a lot of problems and frustrations.

Win7 is NOT Vista, it works like it should and just about everyone is very happy with it.

Of course you may have a few problems trying to use 12 to 15 year old software on Win7, it is likely to be able to get most of it working, it will likely be less problems than XP would create in other areas, especially on a brand new machine.

well for me ....

Windows Key + R | type in "Control Userpasswords2" press enter

upper left hand corner clear the check box "Users Must Enter a User Name and Password to Use This Computer"

you will be prompted to enter a user account and password for the autologin
