Anyone else have a laptop with vista? My laptop has been nothing but problems. Do you think it's worth it just to wipe it and start all over ? I don't have any viruses or trojan horses. My laptop is extremely slow and I don't know what else to do , It's a gateway if that helps..

My first question is, how much RAM have you got? 1GB or 2GB?

I have a laptop with Vista. No problems so far. I just bought it for I-net though really. When I was in BB I heard someone ask about problems with Vista and the sales person said if you don't have at least a 2G it will be slow. So I made sure I got one with 2G.

lol... I just did a system restore from a month ago. Then I'll run avast and then reinstall vz access manager and see how that goes. It hasn't been working right for about a week or so. I'm just so irritated. I've only had the laptop since july 07.

Ok, well, Vista is a memory hog and will bog you down especially when you first buy the laptop. The program has a learning feature on it that makes it runs slow in the beginning but once it learns your computing habits it speeds up SOME. I stress the word SOME! I totally wiped out Vista and put Windows XP on my brand new computer because I could not deal with how slow the computer ran. That is all up to you. Be prepared to pay 200.00 for the operating system and before you do anything at all make sure that that laptop can handle the drivers for XP. When I ran into a problem with a driver when I was installing XP, Dell helped me find a driver that would work with my sound card and XP. If I hadn't gotten that particular agent on the phone I may have been up a creek because she used a driver from an older sound card then what I had and it worked.

Either way you go, make sure you have reliable help to get you through to the end!

Good Luck! :howdy:

Mine is the same way. I have tried everything! I'm thinking about taking it in. It's a Toshiba w/Vista. I had a Compaq that I loved, but it got old and died. Good luck!

Bought a laptop this Christmas from Dell. Made sure it had XP. :yay: No problems. Someone tried to talk me into Vista, yeah, sure. Tried to tell me it was the best thing since sliced bread.

It's horrible! This one was a gift, otherwise I would have gotten XP again. I miss my old laptop!

I hope Microsoft doesn't stop supporting XP soon or software vendors stop developing software for XP.

Wipe the hardrive and start over with XP.

I tried to do a system restore and it will not allow me to. :tantrum:banghead:

The laptop was fast had no problems until about a week ago. My vz access wouldn't work. So I guess I'll just have to wipe it and start from the beginning. Anyone up for a beer ?

I have a Toshiba with Vista (got it about a 9 months ago) and haven't had any trouble. Keep reading everyone's problems but so far, I guess I've been lucky! I did convert from dial-up to broadband though, so maybe that's why I haven't noticed any slowness?

Good point! I would like to get the hardrive replaced on my old one--again-- and just throw this one out the window!

Hard-drives are super cheap, if you know what kind you need and know where to look.

My question to the other geeks out there is...

I recently replaced the hard-drive in this laptop with a bigger one and the old hard-drive is just sitting in a box. (completely erased of course) Now here's the question. Will this old hard-drive that I have work in say a Compaq laptop? I mean I know if it is a SATA the other one being replaced must be too, but since its a Dell hard-drive, will it work in a Compaq computer? Are they basically the same shape and sizes and stuff? I have only dealt with Dell in the past.

A drive is a drive. It's either SATA or PATA (IDE). If the target PC uses the same interface as the drive you have, it will work fine. Just re-partition it and reformat it. You may have to change mount brackets and such.
