My son has Vista and after the "warm up" period it seems to be working fine. I have XP and use Verizon DSL wireless and my computer was completely bogged down. I changed the start up to eliminate the Verizon Help and Support, restarted and it worked fine from then on.
I have word 2007, there is a compatibility checker which sets up your document for earlier versions of Word.

Does anyone know about downgrading to XP... is it something we can do?

Everything. The new start menu, the new Control Panel, the new welcome screen, the new security management, the new display properties thing, the new cursors, the new icons, the chitty Aero graphics, the idiotic gadgets, it's slow, it's quirky, it doesn't work with my TV Tuner, it's slow, etc, etc.
Working fine for me now. You can customize it to your needs.

There's a thread on it. If you give vista time, it's fine.

Microsoft allows a Vista License to be downgrade for XP .... but you need to see which vers = which

Like Vista Basic does not equal XP Home (which I would Avoid)

Go with XP Pro ... but you need to see if the manufacturer can supply your with an XP recovery Disc ... it will simplify things ... other wise you'll be on Newegg or Tiger buying an OEM XP Pro .... if you can still find the Media ....

I have Vista Home Premium... so would I be able to downgrade to XP professinal?

Or would I be better off to wait until the upgrades and patches catch up with Vista?

Do I need to buy more memory? If so, who should I take it to?

I bought my wife a Gateway laptop (for $500) almost a year ago now with Vista Premium. Still runs great. What you have to do is optimize it. If it's only being used for Internet and MSOffice (for school work), try to disable as much as you can from the startup and even some services. Run msconfig and disable as much as you can, do a Google search on each of the startup items to see if they are necessary. Go to your services and disable or change to manual and stop as much as you can.....such as the Windows Media Center and Windows Messenger. If you have a lot things on your system tray (you have too much hogging up resources). All we have showing up is the touchpad, volume, antivirus, wifi connection and time. If you have that Google or Windows Sidebar, disable it. If you only have 1GB of Ram, upgrade it to 2GB. Also always make sure to run the Defrag utility occassionally and your Antivirus/Spyware program.

if you want more memory, go to Crucial.com and run the scan utility or download it. It will show you exactly which type of memory you will need to buy and it will be guaranteed by the company. If you think it costs too much, find something similar on NewEgg.com, could be a lot cheaper.

They are supposed to release the Vista Service Pack 1 tomorrow, but I'd wait a couple of days to see if anyone has problems with it before updating.

DailyTech - Vista SP1 Problems "Bug" Some Users
Initially, some users experienced a catastrophic failure when one of the previous Windows updates was found to trigger an endless boot loop after the installation of SP1. Microsoft quickly pulled the offending update. Now with the release of SP1 to the general public, the large test population is sure to reveal any flaws in the SP1 if there are any.

And it turns out there may be, if initial reports are to be believed. Some people are still reporting being locked into the boot loop, possibly due to the lingering presence of the malignant update.
