Windshield pros/cons...

OK, today seemed like as good a day as any to use the windshield quick loc business and off in a snap. EZ. Plus.

So, I find that my greatest annoyance, helmet buffeting, is GONE. Totally. WTF??? And #2 annoyance, the noise from buffeting, obviously, also gone. Plus, plus.

In it's place, a lot of push against the mid section and more bugs hitting the mid section. Minus.

As I've already found, the shield, mine anyway, does not protect the head from bugs

If anything, I would be likely to wear my jacket more often without the shield so, that's a plus.

When I turn my head, the wind grabs the helmet but, I am more than happy to get used to that over the buffeting.

All in all, I'm thinking the shield is gonna spend a lot of time at home through summer anyway.

Thoughts?

Have you tried attaching a home made spoiler to your helmet to help with the buffeting?

I'm torn with a windscreen. The top edge of the stock screen on the Goldie is smack dab right in the middle of my line of vision. I've had the shop cut it down a few inches, but the buffeting is very annoying. I could get a super tall windscreen which would eliminate the buffet, but I'd much rather look over than thru the screen. And a Goldie looks stupid if you remove it altogether. I may look into the really short screen and see how that works out.

I don't have a buffeting problem  I went with a shorter windscreen to get the edge out of my line of sight. It is only 3 inches shorter than stock.

That's about how much I cut off mine, but I still get buffeting. Different shape screen and air flow, I guess.

Power with Control
Us V-Strom guys have written encyclopedias about buffeting. One oddity, mirrors, at least ours, can have a huge effect. My bike, removing the mirrors, in carefully controlled conditions, removed about %80 of buffeting. Put them back on, fashioned some standoffs for the lower mount point, tipping the windshield back about 2 inches up top, and that made about the same change. Next step is to change the mirrors out for some more aero ones, the Aprilla Tuonos are big crowd pleasers.

So, I say look around at other things that might be affecting it, airflow is a funny thing, a small change can make a huge difference.

Only thing bad about mine is that the airflow runs under the windshield and straight up on my legs. It's wierd. Don't use in much until it gets colder.

I loved my windsheild. Pete is taller then I am so his big noggin was in the wind but I was behind it. I'll never ride without one now.

You got that right. Hell, with the shield on, if I want more air, I just splay my legs out and WHOOOSH. Without it, that move hardly does anything.

The stock windshield on my V Strom would beat me severely about the head at highway speeds.
I got a Windstrom aftermarket shield and it's the best one I've ever used. It's ugly as hell, but my bike looks weird anyway

Not sure how yours is mounted but you can do some fine tuning by inserting rubber washers under the mounting bolts to alter the angle of the air flow. Get them in the plumbing section of the hardware store

Buy a better engineered helmet maybe?

And what do you want, a windshield or a barn door?? I put my summer windshield on. More buffeting, but a LOT more air. If I want quiet push the up button, and the windshield goes up and gives me a quiet pocket.

If you're looking THROUGH your windshield it's too tall.. and you'll find out how bad that is if you get caught in the rain at night.. HUGE mistake.

There are SEVERAL windshield manufacturers out there that have put some R&D into their designs.. Some are just "Laminar Lips" that mount to the top of your currrent screen, or a screen with a bubble.. some have hole cut in the bottom to even out airflow on the front and back of the screen making the air hitting you smoother.

Z-Technic. Cee Baileys for touring bikes, and some sport bikes.. and the crotch rocket crowd has their own specialty windshield makers.

BUT the helmet you wear can make a HUGE difference.

Not sure they make one I'd have to look through.

However, point taken. That is one thing everyone I know has agreed on.
