Wireless connection

I am completely illiterate when it comes to the symantics of a computer. Can your wireless card go bad?

I used to pick up an awesome connection from my neighbor without a separate router, but lately I can connect to her with a strong signal but then it slowly dies and I am having to constantly click repair.

I know it's free and I shouldn't complain, but the connection is now so slow when it used to be so fast. What happened?

A couple thingss could have happened on her end. Maybe she moved the router to another location, Placed something near to the wireless router that is impeding signal, or she may have someone else stealling her signal as well that is futher away.

Just a quick note on Wireless networks that most people do not understand. Even though you have a wireless G router with 54 Mbps this does not mean that you will get those speeds even if you have an excellent connection. If someone or something is connected to your wireless router and is connected at a weak signal you will get the same performance as the weakest user. The wireless network actually throttles back to allow the weakest / slowest user a connection, while at the same time affecting all the other users on the network that are connected wirelessly.

The other thing that people do not understand about wireless is that it is like a pie. What ever the speed of the network is, you divide that for each user on the network. Example: If 10 people are on a wireless G network and all are connected at excellent strength you would take your 54 Mbps and dived that by 10. Thus each user only having a wireless connection of 5.4 Mbps.

Then to really get down to the details if you have a connection rate of 5.4 Mbps this is not neccesarily the through put you will get. This is because there is overhead on the connection that takes some of your through put.

Hope this helps and makes some sense to you.

I usually start at 54 and then it dies down to 5.4, but I can still do whatever I want. Lately, it's been dropping to 1 and when it does that, I barely have a connection at all.

Your post made a lot of sense, but I want to clarify, I am not stealing from my neighbor. It was her suggestion

Read thru this thread. End result was a failing router, all issues resolved when the router got replaced.

I understand. I used to do the same for my neighbors. But when we moved I stopped because I didn't know any of them.

And to repeat the original question, does your internal wireless card go bad?

I've had so many issues with this dang laptop...I guess I should quit dropping it :lmao:

Yes, but it would most likely quit entirely, not just slow down.

I just happen to have a wireless USB adaptor that I'm not using if you want to try that. Not sure how that would get along with your internal card though.

JB if you have internet service at your house, just go get a router. They're only $60.00 for a good one.

I don't. I am picking up from my neighbor and "somewhere" else. I either get Apple or Linksys. The Linksys seems to work better but I don't know where that is coming from.

Funny thing is though, I have to sit in the same exact spot or I get NO connection. I have to sit in the corner of the couch and if I move the laptop to get up, boom, connection lost.

Also, if I have wireless and should be able to pick up on signals...when D has his on (he has broadband), why can't I pick that up?

I can try it. Not sure what you are talking about, but I'm sure the kids would know.

Yes unless you want to be the good neighbor and replace hers. You do not have an internet connection to bring into the router. Therefore you have noting to route. It is all done on her end.

I thought there was this thing that I could buy and it would make the connection stronger. Again, I am computer illiterate when it comes to this type of stuff.

Who is "D" and where does he live? If he lives in your house (or vice versa) and has broadband, you have the fastest connection available. Go get him a wireless router and you're golden.

You plug it into the USB port on the laptop and it picks up the signal. I guess you would have to disable your internal card. There should be a switch to do that. Let me know if you want to borrow it. The laptop I needed it for is out for repair so it's not being used.

Oops, I'd better back up. I don't know where the disk is that came with it. I'll look around more.
