If they are the ones I think you are talking about the factory burned. I also heard that was following a recall due to salmonella. I loved those things...
That reminds me I made some after this tread came out and there is one lonely egg still swimming around in the jar in the fridge. I will have to see if it is still good when I get home.
can I have it?
Found this
Ingredients
4 cups water
2 tablespoons salt
4 cups distilled white vinegar
10 drops red food coloring (optional)
10 links smoked beef sausage
Directions
1. In a large pot over medium-high heat, combine the water, salt, vinegar, and red food coloring. Bring to a boil. Cut the sausage links into halves or thirds, depending on size, and place into a large sterile jar. Pour the hot vinegar mixture in with the sausage, secure the lid, and let stand for 2 days before serving.
Hmm I always thought the juice was red from like pickled eggs the beet juice????
Ok so I read down through some of the comments from other people who tried this, they said to make water only 3 cups and add red pepper flakes, hot sauce and one said garlic but all said it's very good with or without food coloring
I'd use pickle beet juice instead of the water or maybe 1/2 water, 1/2 beet juice and leave the food coloring out.
Isn't the beet juice what gives it the tangy flavor?? Why would anyone use food coloring??
It definitely adds to the flavor. I don't get the food coloring either. Guess to make it look pretty
Conagra stopped manufacturing their jarred pickled hot sausage (brand name Penrose) .

I did find this site:
Hot Pickled Polish Sausage Long Lake Foods
They also have pickled eggs
I figure I might as well order since I spend over $1 for one Hot Mama.
The Elks used to sell yummy hot sausages made by the Amish. The health department brought an end to that but maybe we could get them at an Amish Market.
