It's time for an Amish Barn Raising

I rue the day St. Mary's County no longer has Amish peddlers. What's next? No more horse 'n buggies? No more fields of cattle? No more itsbobs and yards full of chickens? One curmudgeon's eyesore is another man's serene scene.

I like the Amish community presence, and try to support them and other local farmers with my patronage.

Their history here is not as old as some would think. Southern Maryland Dutch Country | WETA

1 to 2 generations ago most locals were farmers or watermen.

I admit I didnt watch your link, but know from personal experience....most are up to 4 generations in Loveville, at least. They came during WWII. PA wanted to force them to go to war, and MD didnt. So they moved here. Ask Norman or Henry Stauffer....they can fill you in.

Interesting, as I've heard it was mor about property and costs

How did that happen, or not happen, at the state level?

Exactly, they probably could use a bigger---permanent structure in an area that doesn't create a traffic hazard.

I agree - a nice permanent structure with flush toilets and running water to wash hands. Other Amish communities have indoor places to sell stuff - heck there is even the Amish that sell in Annapolis Harbor Center several days a week - they come down from PA. They have quite the operation going with all the stuff they sell and and combined with their restaurant easily rake in the dough. And I've been to another Amish market in Dover that has a restaurant, bakery etc etc all on the premises.

With the little parking lot set-up at the library, they are pretty limited in what they sell - veggies and baked goods mostly. In Dover, they have a sit down restaurant, a separate restaurant for food to-go, tons and tons of baked goods, ice cream etc etc.

But if they did that in St. Mary's, would too many people complain that they miss the horse crap?

Oddly enough it was primetime? I dunno how they did it.

Highly doubtful it was a commercial about the library/farmers market. Maybe you were watching the one about the magic fireplace and added two + two = 5 :coffee: What exactly are you trying to accomplish by :deadhorse the Charlotte Hall/Mechanicsville area?

They kind of have that set up in Upper Marlboro in what use to be a old grocery store. Too bad that could never happen at the old McKays in Charlotte Hall once the new one gets built. It would be direct competition for McKays.

You should go check out the Amish Market in Chambersburg PA...

Multiple restaurants, bakeries, butchers, and even a flea market, all under one roof..

I don't see it as a dead horse. This is a forum for the community to talk about issues. If candor bothers you, please don't read it.

Yep, but what a great idea. What if McKay's leased the space to them? Perhaps, that would lessen the impact. Regardless, a full time Amish Market beats the crap out of another Dollar/Thrift/Nails/Liquor/Gold Buying/Casino/Auto Parts/ store.

The problem is that if the local Amish did everything included on everyone's wish lists in the previous posts some of you would still do nothing but bitch and complain.

I just left the McKays in Charlotte Hall less then a hour a hour ago place was empty maybe a dozen cars in the lot around the store, went past Food Lion 3 tims the number of cars. Inside the McKays they appear to be painting a whole lot of the inside. Makes me wonder if the are actually going to be moving why paint all the inside, unless to make it more appealing to the next renter or buyer.

I broke my own rule and stopped in there recently. It looked like they spruced up the lighting a bit since the last time I was there. In general, it appeared much better (cleaner) than the visit that caused me to swear them off. It also looks like they goosed up their product line, because I don't ever remember seeing a lot of Hatfield meat products. They have a long way to go before I become a regular again (still smelss bad in some places), but it's nice to see some positive movement. I just want a nice grocery store (clean, extensive product line, and upscale offerings).

Ooor...you could not read the forum and move on about your day?

I've "moved on" for several days. Actually since you started your whine about something else. Now it's the Amish who are destroying your personal "quality of life" by having a market at a church instead of a building.

Time for you to start calling names and insulting people again.

I used to think you were rational. Not so much anymore.

And, once again, as smart as the Amish are about business don't you kinda think that if they, as a group, thought buying a property and putting up a building was a good business decision they'd have already done so?
