It's time for an Amish Barn Raising

I broke my own rule and stopped in there recently. It looked like they spruced up the lighting a bit since the last time I was there. In general, it appeared much better (cleaner) than the visit that caused me to swear them off. It also looks like they goosed up their product line, because I don't ever remember seeing a lot of Hatfield meat products. They have a long way to go before I become a regular again (still smelss bad in some places), but it's nice to see some positive movement. I just want a nice grocery store (clean, extensive product line, and upscale offerings).

Hatfield is goosing it up? I bought Hatfield sausage not long ago and it was so salty I couldn't even eat it.

I've "moved on" for several days. Actually since you started your whine about something else. Now it's the Amish who are destroying your personal "quality of life" by having a market at a church instead of a building.

Time for you to start calling names and insulting people again.

I used to think you were rational. Not so much anymore.

And, once again, as smart as the Amish are about business don't you kinda think that if they, as a group, thought buying a property and putting up a building was a good business decision they'd have already done so?

First, you bray like an ass about people bitching. Second, no I think you give the amish too much credit. Ever feed a pigeon? My point is the amish won't advance their business as long as they are on the government land. I would normally say it's their business...not mine, but in the case at hand...they are sitting on land that my tax dollars pay for. So, I believe that makes me a shareholder of sorts. So, what's the end game? Do the Amish get to occupy public land permanently? One other point of fact, the market is on the grounds of a public library...not a church as you indicated in your post. Get your facts straight!

Someone's braying like an ass but it isn't me. All you do is bitch. If it's not about water and sewer it's about the Community College. Or groceries. Now it's the Amish. Then you prattle on about the Blue Ocean theory. And get orgasmic about an 8000 sq. ft. grocery store.

Throughout all your rants the whole point of the subject is your convenience or your lifestyle.

And no, I don't give the Amish too much credit. You're looking at heir business decisions through your lens. If there's a buck to be made the Amish will do it. The Annapolis comparison to St. Mary's is invalid, The Mennonites who come down to Harbor Center are from Lancaster and York Counties. The community up there is way more organized and "modern" (if you will) as far as having stores or markets go. They've been doing it for almost 300 years up
there.

Lebanon Levi is expanding to Naptown?

Not that I know of, my point was that the PA Dutch are way more historically in tune with modern business and some of the families up there having been running markets since they came there. The community down here is still mostly focused on farming and being real lone operators. One reason is that there's really not enough of them (and if more moved here there would be bitching about that) to have a year round operation.

Thank you for pointing out the consistency and conviction of my beliefs in higher education, flush toilets, and a seperation of church and state! Your opposition to "formal book learnin' wit' trick words you cain't sound out," a desire to live steeping in your own poop, and a church state is noted without my objection. Try seeing beyond the broken screen door of your trailer! BTW-self identifying as an "honorary SMIB" is just sad. You should never be proud of the fact that your family tree bends back on itself like a pretzel! Hurry along now...I think "Tickle" is a double episode tonight!

I don't see it as a dead horse. This is a forum for the community to talk about issues. If candor bothers you, please don't read it.

Candor doesn't bother me a bit. Selfishness bothers me quite a lot. You portray yourself as the proverbial NIMBY. As has been asked before, why don't you just move to someplace that will make you happy? Obviously, Charlotte Hall/Mechanicsville/Ryceville makes you a miserable cuss.

I'm all for trying to help out the Amish with a farmers market on the lawn of the library, but I think the time has come for them to raise a barn and sell on their own land. One, it would allow them to engage in commerce throughout the year. Second, it removes the shanty town look in front of the library. Like I said, I don't mind helping, but it's gone on too long. If they can afford commericals on TV, they can afford a barn like facility. What other religious community gets this kind of a government accomodation?

:yeahthat: I moved here because I liked the rural character of the area but I don't want to see farmers selling food or smell animals

The Amish have been here since 1939 according to the article posted.
How long have you been in the area Fatrat?
If you haven't been here as long as or even longer than the Amish...STFU & leave US to our peaceful rural surroundings

I hear Colorado likes newcomers who move there for what it is...
Then want to change everything about it :coffee:

Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't know that seniority enhanced citizenship or civic roles? Could you please point out the portions of the US or Maryland constitutions giving "senior land owners" a greater right or a bigger voice in community forums, decisions, or other affairs? If what you say is true, the Amish need to give their farms back to the native americans immediately. As far as shutting me up? Good luck with that precious! You're a keyboard coward. You can't defend your thoughts, so you resort to bullying to silence opposition. Well, I'm not impressed. BTW- please feel free to define the "us" you referred to because it smacks of racism. One last thought, "Who appointed you to speak on their behalf?"

Wait? I'm confused? Whose side are you on? The "not in my backyard" people are the ones that are happy with a litany of liquors tores, fastfood, nail salons, funeral homes, casinos, flea markets, and banks. If I'm understanding what you wrote, you're on my side? How could that be? Freudian slip...I think. Reagardless, welcome to the team. LOL!

Like I said, I used to think you were fairly rational. All you seem to be able to do now is hurl insults.

Well? It's true that I love hurling insults, almost went semi-pro as an Army Drill Sergeant 20+ years ago and later on in a Maximum Security Disciplinary Segregation unit in NJ (I'll leave which side of the bars I was on to your imagination). However, I love a healthy debate even more. I actually like it when someone challenges my ideas. Diversity of thought creates better outcomes.

So, please let's return to the debate at hand and freely challenge my ideas with reason rather than paasion. Again, I don't mind helping the Amish, but I want to know what the strategic plan is going to be. If the plan is a seasonal shanty town on public property in perpetuity than I have a problem, specifically with using my tax dollars to pay for such a lack of vision. It's a seperation of church and state issue to permanently surrender public property to a religious group. If it's not a problem, then folks won't mind if my Mosque opens up a bunch of falafel stands? We've been looking for a place and can pay more rent than the Amish. ~As-Salaam-Alaikum
