55 MPH Speed limit mostly BS

I am hearty agreement with this article condemning going back to 55 as a gas saving effort.

It was BS when they did it before, and we sure dont need it now.

I just got back from Myrtle Beach in my Camry and got a strong 37 MPG with the Cruise Control set at 72 most of the way. There is no way they will ever convince me that driving 55 would have gotten me 38.

Fast starts and stops are what kills gas mileage not steady speed.

The 55 MPH speed limit might be a boon to State coffers as people get nailed for driving over their stupid 55,but it wont help the country out of the current mess we got ourselves into by relying on Muslim oil.

By the way has any politician suggested we uncap some of those wells we capped off and build ourselves a refinery yet> Lets start settling this problem by going to the basics.

I get 35 MPG @ 55-60 MPH, 33 @ 65-70 and 28-30 @ 75-80 in my Focus.

In My Opinion
you guys never took physics and studied things like,, oh lets say, wind resistance, Drag Coefficients and such have you?

On your behalf I will say that with the camery style car, the difference might not be that great, I know its not with my Jetta, 60 mph on the highway is only about .5 mpg change from 80, not hardly enough to try and claim the Nobel prize for figuring out.

however in my truck, at 80mph I am getting around 17mpg, yet if I slow down to 55 on cruise and run steady, I can end up with 21~22, that is an impressive net gain.

the reason is that the power it takes to move air increases as the speed increases, think of moving your had through water, if you move it slow its easy, but if you try to move it through as fast as you can, you feel a great deal of resistance and the energy you use to move it the same distance increases, the same applies with moving the front of a vehicle through the air, its simple physics.

a slower speed with a greater attention to the driving habits may not save you individually millions of dollars, but when the small savings are compounded over the millions of drivers,, well then we see something in the big picture.

Since the 55 MPH speed limit was repealed in 1995, I don't understand what you are complaining about.

Yes, it was bogus from 1974 to 1995. But that's history.

Hear! hear!

This is why I propose that we form a mob of hundreds, if not thousands, and arm ourselves with blow-torches, tire-irons, and hacksaws, hit 235 and take down all the traffic lights.

United, we cannot be stopped!!!

Well then there you have it. Compacts and Sedans should remain at 65+ speeds and trucks should be limited to 55. :jameo:

Oh Please

If the idiot drivers around here could turn left we wouldn't have 1/4 of the lights we have now.

.... geee, that's why we're getting more lights at Airport View

That's all we need. Mandated speed differentials.

Reasonable speeding (65 in a 55) isn't inherently dangerous. The problem is people going 65 and people going 45 on the same road. Speed differential contributes to a lot of serious accidents.

...as an American citizen in a free country, you should be free to do as you please within reason. Wanna go slower and save gas? Get in the middle or slow lane. Wanna make some time? Get in the fast lane.

One thing we NEVER do in this country that would yield dramatic results, every day, is a public service campaign aimed at better driving.

fast lane 65

travel lane 60

enter/exit lane whatever it takes to get on or off then merge to the lane of your choosing.
