My husband and I can take the bully. I assume that when she leaves the rescue, she will be spayed and we can assist with the payment of that and her vet bills if a rescue group can save her from the shelter. We have the chihuahuas but can watch her carefully to make sure there are no signs of aggression. Then that can save her until a forever home is found.

The foster home would probably have her through her healing from the spay.

That's a very generous offer, but I have to say, that while I was impressed with how she and the Rottweiler got along, I'd be concerned about introducing her to chihuahuas!

But I will keep your offer in mind - thanks again!

It's my understanding that the Bulldog has been rescued and is now with one of the rescue's foster moms. If this has not happened yet, the person should be on her way over to the shelter to pick her up. Please let me know if this is not the case.

To my red karma givers:

"what about the others?"
"what about the rest in the shelter?"

The shelter can break a persons heart. Everytime I go in there to take pictures or to help one, it's hard, knowing that the one's I see today may not be there tomorrow.

Can I help them all? Save them all? How I wish I could, they are over run with Labs and Lab mixes, beagles, huskys, and cats to name a few.

I do what I can, when I leave there, I leave depressed but I will continue to go and try to make a difference.

YOU can also make a difference, volunteer some time helping the shelter, you can clean kennels, wash dishes and once the shelter knows you and trusts you, you can also walk these dogs and give them some one on one time with a person, that treats them like they are the king or queen for whatever time you have to spare.

It's sad, no doubt, but until society as a whole quits treating animals as disposable commodities, the shelter will continue to stay full and people like me and other's on this board will continue to try to help the ones we can.

What makes someone up and take an animal to the shelter? Until recently I did not realize so many people spend good hard earned dollars on purebreds and then handed them to a shelter. Unreal. What do you think the ratio is of mixed vs purebreds..Alot more purebreds then I thought for sure. Keep up the good work.

Geez, you're kidding..
One person can't save them all...you're definitely doing your part to help! I agree w/ your comments 100%. More volunteers, more fosters, more education of people at younger ages about the importance of spaying/neutering...etc, could help make a difference. The sad part is, there are tons of shelters at capacity all over the U.S....dogs/cats that will never be adopted and will be put down..but Joe Blow down the street wants to breed his dog cause its so smart, a unique color, to make a dollar... When you get an animal, keep it forever. If you have problems w/ your dog, take it to obedience, take it to a trainer, seek advice instead of dumping it at the shelter, no one said owning a dog or training a puppy would be a breeze. There are alot of ways others could help, instead of being negative...

I'm not sure what the ratio is, I'm not even sure they keep track of that. The little Rottweiler, the owner gave them the vet records, just recently had spend about $200 on vetting, and they still surrendered her.

There are also about 5 Akitas, pure - all OWNER surrenders. One was 8 yrs old and supposedly they weren't turned in by the same person.

No, I will never understand.

They probably got the AKita w/out researching the breed...thought it was a nice fuzzy puppy and cute...and didn't know how their temperament is...

How often are the pictures on the website updated? I made a list of three I would like to rescue about a hour ago and now one of the pictures isn't there. I'm praying that doesn't mean something happened unless she got adopted. I have room for one right now but hopefully after Saturday I could take one more.

The pictures are updated as quick as they can but sometimes it's a couple of days. Just because the picture is gone right now doesn't mean anything has happened to it, they just may be trying to put a fresh one up for exposure.

That's wonderful news! I wish I could take another, but I'm at my limit right now, with 5 fosters at my house.

Thank you!

BEAGLE LOVERS? There was a small female beagle there, seemed sweet, so quiet, I finally coaxed her to the door to pet her, she was scared to death to be there, I'm not sure I think it said she was either 3 or 5. I mean she was SMALL....

I think anyone who works with animal shelters/rescues, including the Animal Control Officers are incredible people. I’ve always been amazed at their heart filled dedication to the job.

It is a tough job, long hours, for little pay. You might not save them all but for the ones you do save you do make a difference.

I’ve always been in the opinion that a pet is a life long choice and you stand by them and do what it takes to make it work. You don’t drop off a pet at a shelter because they chewed your shoe. Actually, I couldn’t believe the excuses a friend of mine told me her mother hears at one of the local shelters. It is very sad indeed. Good post Krazd.

Earlier this year in February, I had a feral kitten hanging around my house for about a month before she was captured and brought into our house. I called the shelter and spoke to several different people there who were extremely helpful and I was also clued in to the reality of her fate if I chose to dump her off at the shelter. I ended up keeping her and she is a pretty damn good cat now other than the fact she thinks she is the boss of me.

I forgot to add, another way to help is to become a foster home for one of the rescues in this area. With more foster homes, they are able to help more animals, that's what normally ties a rescues hands, when they have no place for an animal to go.

I have to doubt the fact that the animals were purebred. The best breeders also participate in rescue and have a strict policy that they get the dog back "if it doesn't work out" even if the dog is no longer intact for breeding purposes.

What I don't get is the "if it doesn't work out" statement. To me, having a puppy is like having a child. Live with the bad, enjoy the good, but either way you are responsible for a life.

Anyone who gives their dog up to a shelter is beneath contempt.

Unfortunately there are way too many BYB's that are breeding "pure" bred dogs and THESE are the one's that wind up in the shelter. Take a walk through the shelter, you'll be amazed how many pure bred dogs are there.

BUT, what I doubt is that all these Akitas were turned in by "different" people. They all look alike, same coloring and features. I "feel" like it's different people, but all from the same place.

I will say that some people that turn their dogs in the shelter don't know any better and may feel like they really have no choice. These are the people that need educated.

I think the 'Best Breeders' are the key words in your statement. Although contracts are signed and that 'statement 'if it doesn't work out' is in the contract, some dogs still are taken to the shelter, there is no way of knowing unless the dog/cat is checked on regularly. Even dogs/cats that have been adopted from rescues here in the county, have ended up in the classifieds, re-sold, and dumped at the shelter...
