I think the 'Best Breeders' are the key words in your statement. Although contracts are signed and that 'statement 'if it doesn't work out' is in the contract, some dogs still are taken to the shelter, there is no way of knowing unless the dog/cat is checked on regularly. Even dogs/cats that have been adopted from rescues here in the county, have ended up in the classifieds, re-sold, and dumped at the shelter...

It's easy to dump an animal at the shelter. If you take it back to the breeder or to a 'rescue' you have to take time..explain..etc. I think a lot of people just don't want to deal with having to explain because most of the time the reason for getting rid an animal is pretty lame.

Agree 100%...Very true...

Good news - Just heard the 8 mo old rottie pup and 4 or 5 others are being pulled from the shelter by a rescue...more foster families = more dogs saved...

Remember the shelter when you're looking for a good life long companion....

Thank you Rescue, this is the best news I could have gotten for Christmas - this little Rottie girl will make someone a wonderful dog, as well as the Bulldog you pulled as well. Bless you!

The Rottie and Bulldog slept side by side last night (in separate crates, of course) and are doing well. :huggy: The Bulldog needs much attention but is a lover. The Rottie is very mature for her age and is eager to please. The Coon Hound we also picked up is the sweetest girl in the world and seems to be enjoying the young ones with her. :howdy: We're going to give them the best Christmas we can here and hope they find forever homes in the New Year! :flowers:

I seriously cannot thank you enough, I was calling to put my name on the Rottie girl, while you all were there picking her up.

I'm so glad that you had the room and the love available to give all three of them! :flowers:

If you get a chance, post some pictures!

Charging the camera now, will try to get pictures out this afternoon or evening. :howdy:

BEAGLE LOVERS? There was a small female beagle there, seemed sweet, so quiet, I finally coaxed her to the door to pet her, she was scared to death to be there, I'm not sure I think it said she was either 3 or 5. I mean she was SMALL....

Is this the same dog?

No, this was the brown and black coon hound with medical problems. :howdy: She's 6+ (and I do mean plus) and I have a feeling she might be with us for a while. :huggy: Someone else with the rescue did take a small shy beagle that might be the one you are referring to. :flowers:

What makes someone up and take an animal to the shelter? Until recently I did not realize so many people spend good hard earned dollars on purebreds and then handed them to a shelter. Unreal. What do you think the ratio is of mixed vs purebreds..Alot more purebreds then I thought for sure. Keep up the good work.
I was talking to a lady from one of the Calvert rescues (PAWS) I think and she had the statistics for how many purebreeds where in the shelter and etc. She even knew how many animals were taken in, how many were adopted out, how many went to rescue groups and how many were euthanized. The sad part is the numbers are shocking and I do not think that enough people realize what those numbers are. Many people on this forum are starting to see just how many animals go to the shelter and just how many are purebreeds. I was at the shelter not to long ago and saw just as many purebreeds as I did mixes and sadly the top ones to be euthanized for overpopulation in our area are Rotties and Beagles. I do think that alot of the information that people are relaying on these forums has helped to get the message out there just how bad it is in this county. So I guess we are all making some head way :yay:

We just got back from Ohio to visit family for Christmas and brought back an English bulldog who was taken into an Ohio local shelter. My Sister in law is a rescue volunteer and got the call Christmas Eve to come and get him from the shelter and I went with her. Sad thing is, he's only 3 months old and pure bred. Some people bought him from a pet store and within a month after they got him, he got a cold and pooped in their house.Well, they didn't want to potty train him so they surrendered him to the shelter, AKC papers and all. How sad. People are sick. At least Tank (our new addition) had a Merry Christmas. He hated the flight home. I have him on a course of antibiotics to get rid of the cold and the worms (hence the pooping in the house). What a sad thing that all the previous owners had to do was go to the vet to realize why he was sick. He'll be going to my vet here to get neutered and checked out as soon as the worms are gone and he kicks his cold.

Loving animals makes me realize why I dislike so many people.

Ditto!! I need one of those bumper stickers!!! My husband thinks I am crazy and says stuff to me all the time about bending over backwards for animal and shunning most people. These animals cannot help themselves. Tank sounds adorable....good job and congratulations!!!

I have that feeling to.

I have that adorable litter of puppies right now, and the momma dog. Momma is SUCH a huge lovebug. I can't imagine someone just getting rid of her.

Now I am going to need to hug Tugger's a little bit harder tonight.
