This story gets better and better. Do high speed chases ever end well?

Horrible accident just south of Gate 1. Someone had to be flying. 235 South is blocked off at Pegg Road.

The white SUV might not have been flying. Head on into a tree at 50-55 could cause all of that..... And yes, 55 is 10 over for that stretch, but thats not what most folks consider "flying".

I'll bet the primary cause is a failure to yield the right off way by someone coming from the side road.

Looks like someone came out of the old IHOP parking lot and mixed it up with someone going straight. The white SUV is right out in front of the small failed used car lot on SB 235. Hit this tree right here.

Geez. They just don't make engines like they used to. Why plant trees in a median anyway? Though it is possible it prevented a head-on. Still?

And here 4 hours later they still have that road shut down so I got shunted up through patuxent homes and I'm still trying to get out of there 15 minutes later

This reports says witnesses are saying they were possibly racing and that speed is a factor.

Yep, not a huge fan of bystanders impression of speed. Unless there was something to judge by like other vehicles, people are pretty poor judges of things like distance and speed. Might turn out that way, but excessive speed wouldn't be required to cause the damage we see.

Geeze you would think the base police would have blocked off the lane leaving the base for turning left in that amount of time. At 4 PM all kinds of cars were in the lane to turn south on R235 having to merge back into the straight lane.

Yep, and folks going south who could see the huge truck and woodchipper and cones blocking the southbound lanes. Still didn't merge right and needed to join the flow after heading down Pegg Road West.

I see this sort of thing constantly. They are so quick to block roads, but virtually never assign anyone to direct the traffic shitstorm caused by altering the flow. Lots of folks cut through Patuxent Homes. But there was nobody at the end of Midway Drive to hand direct traffic to ensure that the flow down Great Mills Road was stopped often enough to prevent a 30 car backup......

If you don't want to assign officers, train up some MDOT or county road folks and deploy them.

There was a base cop sitting in his vehicle watching the backup and cones sitting on the median island, all he had to do was get off his ass and put up a few cones. I don't expect a lot from base cops after a close accident with one a few years back.
