Aid Flowing?

Even you said yourself in a post was it yesterday or the day before, that you might consider roughing it in your basement before venturing off to a shelter.

I’m claustrophobic so I would beat feet to another state and wait before I’d consider a shelter, but who really knows what reasons some of these people had for staying.

It is easy to Monday morning quarterback any situation. It is different to have to make the decisions beforehand.

The blunt end of this storm was NOT projected to hit where it did, so that may have been a factor in some of the decisions that were made.
Worthy of quoting.

Shep's on TV talking to people wading out of the water. I have to believe they don't appreciate him standing there all fat and happy, sticking a microphone in their face, while they're tired, hungry and thirsty and have just lost everything.

This morning they showed a guy on his roof, waving his t-shirt at the TV helicopter that was videotaping the mess. And the copter crew is just, like, flying and talking, "Ah...there's a man stuck on his roof, watching his neighbors house burn. He's probably been there for a day or more, probably hungry, thirsty..."

And I was just incredulous! Why the hell wouldn't the chopper drop the ladder and rescue that guy????? Why didn't Shep and his crew bring water and food for these people??? I mean, damn!

Equally at fault.

I know what you mean Steve.:huggy: Many people are stupid in this world and I wish I could just do something to help turn that around. I think you feel the same watching some of these decent honest human beings suffer because of mere stupidity.
Okay, I am on page 5... Are the next 5 plus pages more of the same? Is it safe to just read from this post forward? without going back to page 6?

If they get involved they have less time to cover the story. They don't want to get involved, just record it "au natural."
I just find that beyond crass. Maybe that's why I'd never be a reporter - I don't think I could wolf down a filet, then stick a microphone in the face of people who've gone through such a tragedy.

And it would have made a much better story to actually have the reporter take part in a live rescue. It would have been a PR homerun if Shep could have told those people coming out of the water, "Go on over to that truck - there's some sandwiches, water and coffee for you all," instead of standing there like an idi...uh, Kennedy...going, "So how do you feel? Are you tired? Hungry?"

This one woman just WENT OFF - "Yes, you fool - I'm hungry, I'm thirsty, I'm exhausted and I'VE LOST EVERYTHING!!!" Shep's just kind of like, "Uh...okay...um...Sir! Yes, you sir! How are you feeling right now?"

I'll agree to that somewhat but...

What about that cop getting shot in the head? What about the childrens hospital? When was the last time rational people acted in this manner? Nevermind, don't answer that.:ohwell:
Scared people do stupid things !

Isn't this thread about Buloxi and New Orleans, not Indonesia?

This is about aid coming to those places from countries such as Indonesia or lack of and why it makes sense or not. Indonesia was stated in the staring thread.

Charity starts at home.

You don't see a whole lot of Americans all flying down to help out either. This on a whole different scale.

Yes, all those hundreds of Red Cross Workers are just paid employees who go there because they have to. The planes the airlines sent in to the one working runway to get some people out and drop off supplies was because they had to. The millions going into charity vaults for the cause is because they have to. The hundreds of others (doctors, etc...) who have driven down there to help did it because they have to. Those churches going to erect shelters nearby for those who are homeless are doing it because they have to, not because they want to. The people who have gone out there to add their boats to the rescues are doing it because they were forced to, not because they care. The driveling posts by people like you complaining about nothing being done while you post on doing nothing is because you ... suck.

I've been thinkin', maybe it's a bad idea but here goes...

Remember our fund raising for Rondevous, could we do the same thing except with the Red Cross and sometime in the near future?
Along those lines...my friends' band, Poor Boy Zeus, is playing at Bowen's on Sept 24th and the proceeds will go towards the relief effort.

TOKYO — The Japanese government will provide $200,000 in cash to the American Red Cross and offer up to $300,000 worth of tents, blankets and other supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said Friday.

Japanese automakers have also announced emergency aid packages, with Toyota Motor Corp pledging a total of $5 million to support activities of the Red Cross and the Friedkin Disaster Relief Fund. Nissan Motor Co said it and its employees will offer a total of $750,000 and 50 pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles for Red Cross workers. The Japanese Red Cross Society decided to provide $200,000 to its U.S. counterpart.
