I LOVE you!

Are you really going? Are you with a group or just going down?

She cleared that up a few post ago.

A few of my co-workers from my previous job are heading down, but they have skills, unlike me, who could only do their taxes.

I do plan on making a donation to the American Red Cross this week when I get paid.

I wish. I'd go in a nannosecond. Otter and I talked about it. We'd get in the way. I am on two boards..Boxer and Birds. They are already talking about setting up foster homes for the exotic birds and dogs that will need help.

I am just sad. I cannot know what was in their minds. It would be hard for me to leave but I have a means to do so. I have a good income, I have a large vehicle, I could pack things, take my pets and go far enough. Some people don't have that luxury. Some of the people involved here are the poorest in our nation. Who knows why they stayed but I can't condemn them to their fate while I sit here in my home with everything I could ask for.

Why are you people so evil? Yeah, it wasn't the smartest thing to stick around when a hurricane was headed their way, but at this point, it's too damn late to argue about that fact. Right now we have God knows how many people who have had their entire lives washed away (which, if anyone stops and thinks, is the same case for the people who evacuated, assuming they didn't take their homes and all their worldly belongings with them). And yeah, a small percentage of the tens of thousands of people without homes are jackasses and are finding themselves the highlight of every news reel. Does that invalidate the fact that decent, law-abiding citizens of our country need help? So they made a poor judgement call, should they just be thrown to the wolves (or gators or what-have-you) because we're soooo much smarter than they are? How do you know how you would react when faced with the same decision? Do you all think that every single person still in New Orleans is not a fighter? You don't think there's someone who, before Monday, thought they were the shiat, and could take anything coming their way and come out unscathed? At what point are you going to wake up and see just how disgusting you are being?

I'm not really going, but I WANT to go. I feel the need to do SOMETHING..ANYTHING. I don't know what they were thinking, what they were feeling...why they didn't leave their homes. That doesn't matter to me, they need help. There are children that need help. It's heartbreaking to watch.
Send money, that is what they need. Help defer the taxpayer expense. I think anyone going down there that have no skills in disaster relief would just wind up being a burden and taking up valuable room for those who are truly needed. That's my two cents so there.

You stinker - you got me all excited.

Catt, if you want to help, call Mike Zabko at the SoMD Red Cross - 1-800-276-2767 - and he'll tell you what you can do.

Hey Vrai...

I've been thinkin', maybe it's a bad idea but here goes...

Remember our fund raising for Rondevous, could we do the same thing except with the Red Cross and sometime in the near future?

Exactly, just an added burden on an already taxed infrastructure.

I'll take Vrai's advice and call Red Cross. I'll also be working the "pets" end of things with my rescue groups.

No, I know where it is but as I understand it Vrai and Rondevous set it all up last time. I would be more than delighted to coordinate an event if they were unavailable to do so. However, they are the go-to people as of now for information on that topic.

Stop being a Kennedy. These people were told to evacuate, they didn't do it. Now a lot of them are looting and assaulting their fellow survivors. Yes, there are some who aren't partaking of the free goodies, but the fact is they should have left when told to get out.

It's like that video of that guy who saved his kids but lost his wife - I kept yelling at the screen, "WHY DIDN'T YOU EVACUATE?????"

What all of you in your sadness and despair are failing to acknowledge and grasp, is that the idiots who were fully capable of leaving, and chose to stay just because, are severely impacting and bogging down rescue efforts that should be for those who truly could not get out.

If I were the big man in charge, I'd make it a Federal crime to not heed evacuation warnings and if rescue workers have to risk life and limb to come save your sorry ass, you should face jail time and be forced to reimburse the police department, ambulance service, Coast Guard etc... every dime that went out to rescue you.

I wanted to point out. The Indonesia tsunami occured with no warning, compounded with very poor Third World infrastructure, hence the high death toll.

I agree with that partially. Other things to consider is that part of the worls is very densely populated. Also tsunamis are not very common in the Indian Ocean area. When the seas receeded over 100 yds in some areas people went out to the exposed sea floor to pick up the fish on th ground instead of running to higher grounds. So they actually had warning of several minutes or more in some cases...they just didn't know how to read the signs.

In some countries such as Japan where the word tsunami comes from if they saw the seas receeding they'd be running for higher grounds.

But unfortunately, we have no clause that omits stupid people....

So according to you, we have a country full of stupid people. What are you going to do about it besides complain?
