I agree with that partially. Other things to consider is that part of the worls is very densely populated. Also tsunamis are not very common in the Indian Ocean area. When the seas receeded over 100 yds in some areas people went out to the exposed sea floor to pick up the fish on th ground instead of running to higher grounds. So they actually had warning of several minutes or more in some cases...they just didn't know how to read the signs.

In some countries such as Japan where the word tsunami comes from if they saw the seas receeding they'd be running for higher grounds.
You have proof of that? I didn't see that as being a factor then.

I've been thinkin', maybe it's a bad idea but here goes...

Remember our fund raising for Rondevous, could we do the same thing except with the Red Cross and sometime in the near future?
Can't we do it at my house this time? I have more bathroom's. :drama:

This storm missed its original targeted point and hit another area hard. I realize that is the uncertainty of Mother Nature, but for all we know, these people may not have had a place to go. They may not have had the funds for a hotel, or whatever, we don’t know why some stayed and some didn’t.

All I am reading is just some assumption that they stayed because they didn't listen. Even that isn't known for sure.

Stop being a Kennedy. These people were told to evacuate, they didn't do it. Now a lot of them are looting and assaulting their fellow survivors. Yes, there are some who aren't partaking of the free goodies, but the fact is they should have left when told to get out.

It's like that video of that guy who saved his kids but lost his wife - I kept yelling at the screen, "WHY DIDN'T YOU EVACUATE?????"

I can see where nickel is going and partially agree with her but I agree more with you. Not only did these people endenager themselves they endangered their families and anyone who have to go rescue them. When FL got hit by multiple hurricanes I kept reading that New Orleans is very vunerable to a hurricane. If it is hit directly by a major hurricane the whole city could be destroyed and they would not bother rebuilding the city since it is in such a high risk area.

which part about it being densely populated or that you get several minutes of warning in some cases in a tsunami after the sea pull away from shore?

There are only a zillion shelters set up. They could have gone to the Superdome, they could have gone to a homeless shelter out of town - this is America and EVERYONE has a place to go in times of trouble.

"They" say that most of the lives lost in the tsunami were tourists. The locals were smart enough to run like hell when they saw the water pull away.

Buloxi and New Orleans populaces knew the storm was coming. They planned for the storm, but not the sea surge that really has done the bulk of the damage. People were warned; they knew. Now they are facing the repurcussions.

The Superdome has got to be the stupidest place to put these people. In going with the "they told you to get the eff out, so get the eff out" theme...why would they say "If you can't get out, come to the Superdome"? Why not use all of the buses they have at the airport (and they have tons) and throughout the city (tours and all that) to bus those people out of the city...even just right out of the city, somewhere that wasn't going to be in the middle of a lake by the end of the day?

In Phuket province in Thailand that was true partially. Both locals and tourists were killed. It hit a tourist beach so most that died were tourists. I have actually visited the areas in Phuket where the Tsunami hit and they were full of topless Europeans. However in Indonesia I think the hardest hit was Bandeh Aceh which is a fairly isolated region. In Badeh Aceh fathers sent their kids out to fetch the fish on the exposed sea floor.

Even you said yourself in a post was it yesterday or the day before, that you might consider roughing it in your basement before venturing off to a shelter.

I’m claustrophobic so I would beat feet to another state and wait before I’d consider a shelter, but who really knows what reasons some of these people had for staying.

It is easy to Monday morning quarterback any situation. It is different to have to make the decisions beforehand.

The blunt end of this storm was NOT projected to hit where it did, so that may have been a factor in some of the decisions that were made.

What's New Orleans and Buloxi have to do with Indonesia? These people were living on the beach in shacks.

Isn't this thread about Buloxi and New Orleans, not Indonesia?

This is kind of interesting coincidence....I just finished physical geography during the summer and we covered hurricanes a lot in the textbook and watched a few hurricane specials from National Geographic and news reports. Majority of the people who die from hurricanes and typhoons die from the sea surge.
