I am looking for my original disks that came with my PC and when I find them (hopefully this week?), I will try the latest tips. However, if that fails, I will be attaching another PC to my PC (someone had mentioned that master/slave thing) in an attempt to get my files. If I am successful, I will resort to reloading the OS to be able to use the PC again, and will lose all of the apps I had that I bought and d/l onto it.

Anyone want to recommend a product that also provides Malware protection that runs all the time (do they still call them TSR's or is that old school now? lol).

Obviously having AVG free on my PC, and it running on every boot wasn't enough to protect me. So I need to be sure I will be fully protected this time.

Ark what you want to do is pull the hard drive out of the pc with a problem and connect it to a working pc. Boot up the working pc and the connected drive should appear under My Computer, copy all your files/ pictures that you need to the working PC, and you have saved your files. As far as an AV program goes you can always use Microsoft Security Essentials, have used it before and it is pretty good.

I offered to help .... stubborn :buddies:

My biggest deterrent in trying to schedule something like that with someone is time. I know it could take hours. I would:

1) Need to have time myself to devote to sitting there to see/learn

2) I would feel awkward about someone spending their time helping me

3) AND most important, I need to find the disks that came with the PC

I do appreciate your offer of assistance however.

I have been wondering what difference it makes to remove the drive from the PC if it's still going to have the same OS that is expecting a login to get to certain files? Or am I adjusting the Master/Slave toggle switch on the drive when I remove it? Depending on the type of cable used to connect the disk to the PC (PC is 5 years old and a Dell), I may or may not be able to connect said HD to the second computer which is a cheapie laptop from Staples Toshiba .

Btw win 8 is weird. Are there any good online tutorials? Or are the tutorials on the computer sufficient to get the needed understanding?

Different OS

the only issue I ever had was accessing a folder on the 'other' drive, but one I took 'ownership' of the folder / directory, it gave up its files ....

and if it looks like it will take more than a hour or two [how long do you want to wait, you can pick it up when I am finished]

no master / slave when a USB Adapter is used

so ..... I go to Staples to buy a data cable (usb to usb? with hope to get my files off my PC) and I talk to Will (Waldorf location) and he says if my problem is what he thinks it is, he can solve the problem for $69. If it isn't that, he can get my files off my PC for $69 - hmm so he makes it seem like this is such an easy problem to solve? Or was he just taking :bs:?

I really don't have $69 to pay someone to do something I can do, IF I knew WHAT to do, you know? I've tried everything that has been suggested to me and nothing has solved the problem.

I am trying hard to NOT bother people at work about this. I am odd, yes I know. Chances are the folks at work can fix this quickly. Why have I been suffering for months with this issue?

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I finally went to 301 Computers today and a very nice man helped me. He had to use a password cracker to crack my password in Vista, then he was able to create a new admin profile so I could get to all my files under the old user profile. Cost me $30 for his use of the password cracker software. I am thrilled to have access to my files again and expect that I can finish the IRS forms now - :yay: . Hmm and to think that guy at Staples wanted to charge me $69.95. I got LUCKY!!!!! I was so thinking I was gonna have a $100+ bill for this. Some of my relatives have used 301 Computers also and were quite happy.
