Regardless of what it was it was done incorrecly if it wasn't in her.

That's not true. IUDs are frequently expelled--hence the 'check string'. The body recognizes it as a foreign object, that's the basis of the IUD's use (the uterus makes itself uninhabitable so that the thing will get out, which is what keeps pregnancy from occuring).

I've never heard of them coming out. Dislodging but not coming out. But I'm no expert on them either.

Off the Mirena website..Q. How often should I see my healthcare professional?

A. You should visit your healthcare professional 3 months after Mirena is placed to make sure it is in the right position. After that, Mirena can be checked once a year as part of your routine exam.

I believe that refers to a more invasive check by the OB...not personal care.

http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/iudinfo.htm :

It is recommended that women check their IUD after each period.

http://www.engenderhealth.org/wh/fp/ciud2.html :

It is important that you learn to check the IUD strings so that you can be sure the IUD is still in place.

http://www.parknicollet.com/Clinic/HealthInfo/Womens_Health/IUDs/IUD-check/iud-check.html :

Your IUD may expel completely from your body with or without your knowledge. It may also expel from your uterus and remain in your vagina. The IUD can be expelled at any time.

More then likely his insurance will cover it. Assuming insurance in germany is anything like in the us. If not, then the fallout will be that doctors will stop doing the procedure.

If you read the article it says that the device could not be found in her body. I'm assuming she had an IUD. While even with an IUD there will always be a small (read small) risk of pregnancy, if the doctor did not put it in correctly or at all than he should certainly be held accountable. Malpractice, plain and simple. Now if it were in fact in her and she got pregnant than that's just the risk you take. She thought she had some level of protection that she in fact did not.

Yeah someone definitely hit her with the super splash...
