Anyone else not liking the new 98 Star mornings?

Well, guess what? Since the last post, Star 98.3 has changed AGAIN!

Guess ole' Moondog wasn't cutting it trying to fill T-Bone and Heather's shoes. I understand he's now doing mornings over at WMDM (97.7), which used to be the "Oldies Station".

You've been doing your homework.

As someone who spent almost 15 years in radio, from small all the way to major broadcast markets, I've seen these kinds of changes over and over.

As someone who's spent almost 35 years listening to radio, from small to major broadcast markets, I've also seen these kinds of changes over and over.

Star 98.3 should never have messed with the basic format. Granted, you can't be a "Classic Rock & Roll" station playing the same songs forever, but new songs get added to the "Classic" collection everyday, and few listeners tire of them. Also, since Star 98.3 is essentially automated all the time (except for weekday mornings), spend enough to at least do a top-notch morning show.

So what, did you and Moondog start a "DJ-fued" in Aching Ass Hole, Idaho a few years ago, which you're trying to drag to Maryland

The move of WMDM (97.7) from Oldies to an Alternativie Rock format was a horrible decision.

Wow you are an expert.

Just look around these forums to find out the intense negative reaction against the new format. We're just a cross-section of the population here, I know - but if the buzz here is any indication, the station be down the shitter in two weeks flat.

I can't help but wonder why they picked now to change the format. They've never done that before.

Your only sponsors will be bars, night clubs, and zit cream commercials. I give that format only a year or two before it's gone (after they've lost enough money on it). If management's smart, leave the country station(102.9) alone!!!! It'll make you a mint!

Yeah - it was a good idea to set up a country music station here. It'll make them lots of money - I can't wait to see how it turns out for them.

Radio used to be entertainment, news, sports, contests, etc...and gave birth to some legendary personalities.

Well back in my day we didn't have fancy-shmancy radios. Me and my sister, we had nothing but two cans and a string, and we would take turns singing songs to each other.

And we were grateful for the cans.

Actually, Toxick, I don't even know Moondog! Never been in Idaho, either (love their spuds). Appreciate your thoughts though. Either I'm an aging broadcast dinosaur who's out of touch. If not, I'm really worried about radio's long-term viability. You've got an entire generation of kids growing up internet-saavy, Ipod totin', with no idea of what made for great radio. BTW, I'm talking about radio up till about the early 1990's. It's just been the last 15 years or so that it's been in decline. Not sure what kind of radio that XM and Sirius will produce. Jury's out!

Well, it seemed that you are prematurely ringing the death-knell of both radio stations, right out of the chute, and your tone was smarmy and very "neener-neener-neener". It made me think that you had a previous beef with the guy for something.

I'm sure you do.

"Great radio" is an incredibley suggestive term. And it is inevitablely decided by the audience - NOT by the broadcasters, producers or salemen at the radio station. They merely try to capitalize on what the audience wants and produce what the masses have deemed to be "great radio".

What made great radio in the 40's through the 60's would hardly be considered anything great by today's standards. And a time-traveller from the 40's-50's would scream in horror at what radio has become.

I guess you can call it "decline" if you want. I just call it change.

Well Cable TV didn't destroy Network TV like they said it would. And now people watch cable in conjunction with the network TV - and since network TV has the best shows, they're still Supreme King Turds of the Shitpile.

I assume that something similar will happen as pay-radio evolves.

 A time traveler from ten to twenty years ago would have the same reaction! :lmao: Today's radio is pretty lame. I'm glad I can tune away from the worst stations and REALLY glad I have a collections of CDs.

Lame is also an extremely subjective term.

While you and Kahuna lament the bygone days of "good radio", I'm wallowing in glee because I love listening to the radio the way it is right now. There's only a few things I want from it: News, Music, Occasional Comedy.

I get news all day every day on the radio. They have CNN Headline News on AM, along with at least 100 News channels - each one adequately broadcasting the news. I like Music - especially now that 97.7 is broadcasting some great material (despite assertions to the contrary). And Don & Mike and The Greashman make me belly-laugh, every time I turn them on. (Well.. almost every time).

Anyway, the point is: Just because some people don't like the current trends of a given venue (i.e. radio) that doesn't mean it's going to die; because there's still a lot of people who DO like it (like Yours Truly), who will keep it alive.

And the inventor of the off switch finally rests peacefully in his grave.
