Apartments in Lexington Park

not impressed
This may well be my first post and I'm resurrecting a semi-dead thread but I was curious if a consensus was ever reached on the best place for someone new to the area? I'm coming in February from China Lake and have been looking hard at Elan and Abberly Crest. I'm leaning towards AC just because of the proximity to the base.

Foxchase has the highest ratings

We lived in Abberly from 08-09. Our rent for a 3br/2ba was a little over 1400/mo. Its probably higher now. We liked the floor plans, the pool and most neighbors. The office staff changed right before we moved. They were okay but not always on the same page. Just know you probably won't get your whole deposit back either. We had carpets professionally cleaned, scrubbed everything and vacuumed. We still were docked almost $500 I think. We had a 2nd floor apt and could only hear the people above us when it was quieter and the kids were taking the dog out. The neighbors beside us we could here only if the kids were louder than usual. Remember if your single, its apartment living and there are families. It took my husband 20 min to get home from gate 3 going the back way past Park Hall ES.

Thanks for the insight...Not sure what you mean about apartment living and families?

Foxchase eh, hm...haven't seen that one, I'll have to look into that. The whole ratings thing seems really odd for SOMD...Seems like every place that has any ratings is just this side or that of completely unlivable. But then again, very rarely do people who are happy go and seek out ratings websites.

A hint about Foxchase, when I moved here back in 1993, a buddy casually called it "Footchase", and it really hasn't changed in the intervening years.

Bring your long johns! Brrrr.

IMHO, it really doesn't matter. Just don't sign a long term lease in case once you are here for a while you find you want to rent a garage or basement or townhouse apartment or something else for a better deal.

And as for being "close" to base, everything is close to base as long as you stay in St Mary's County. You can go as far our as Dameron, St.Mary's City, to Great Mills, California, and even Leonardtown. It will still be an easy drive. Going into Calvert County or the Northern part of St Mary's County will make for a little longer drive but still doable.

So speaking of this I have gotten the impression that the Riverbay Townhomes should be avoided at all costs even though they're reasonably priced and come with a garage? I put my name in the hat for one before I was aware of this and they called yesterday and said one was coming available soon. I'd *really* like to have a garage for my motorcycle but...yeah, people don't seem to have good things to say.

Again IMHO, it doesn't matter where you pick. The reason folks say don't move here or there is because there is section 8 (assisted living) apartments/homes in that area. The thing is there is section 8 in every apartment complex. Truth. Rental properties cannot discriminate.

I've been to that complex visiting a friend. That would be uber close to the back gate at Pax (limited hours). The only problem I'd see is the kids/brats. They come out and play after school in the middle of the complex street, so you need to take it easy on your lead foot in the neighborhood. And keep your bike and other valuables out of your little yard so little sticky fingers aren't tempted. As long as you aren't working a night shift and trying to sleep during the day when they are out playing - it shouldn't be an issue. Oh I do see another problem - there's a lot of darn stairs! But as long as you are healthy that shouldn't be a problem.

Again, I would suggest not signing a long term lease, because odds are you will find something you like better later, no matter where you move now. I know I did. Some of your best deals will be rentals of homes/townhomes in this area. If not outright condo/townhome purchase.

Thanks for the advice. I had seen that a lot of the this place is awful, don't live here was code for "low income folks live here". I'm not too concerned about that...We're surrounded by meth heads out here, don't think it could get much worse. Long term definitely intend to purchase but I'm looking at a couple years down the line and probably selling my house out here first (keeping it as a rental to start for convenience's sake as a coworker is renting it).

I knew coming from China Lake you'd be okay.

That's what happens here too, people rent out their homes cause they need to leave the area. That's why I keep saying you'll probably find something "perfect" for you once you get here and it probably won't be in any apartment complex.

Good luck.

I think, as a MWF, if I was single and younger and moving to the area, I'd consider Riverbay. The apartment with garage is pretty spacious. You get a little balcony. There's good storage space. The section 8 doesn't bother me. I'd love being so close to the Bay. (small beach with some water within walking distance).

Salt Life
While my house was being built I lived in The Greens for 3 months. I chose the older apartments without all the fancy upgrades, saving a little bit of money each month. The apartment was clean, neighbors were very friendly, and the staff was awesome! My entire security deposit was returned to me and we have 2 dogs and a cat, and all 3 were in the apartment.

I lived there from 1998-2000. I had NO issues there at all. I am not sure how it is now, but I have a friend that has been there for 5 years. I haven't heard her complain about it.

I lived there in 2003 for a few months. I hated it. The living room and bedrooms were decent sized but the kitchen was tiny. I couldn't stand my neighbors either. I think it was an age thing though. I was well out of my partying stage and quite a few of my neighbors were constantly throwing parties.

Foxchase doesn't have townhouses and they do not accept Section 8.
