Baby Food

watercolor

yeah yeah
Alright- I have been told that it's ok to start the baby food, stage 1, when she hit 2 mths old. Well, she is there. Now, my questions are:

1) should I always mix the baby food for right now with cereal or can it be done alone

2) should I only work with 1 type, such as 1 fruit and then a week later, 1 veggie or can I/should I do a fruit and veggie at the same time

3) Any particular brand better than the other? I got beechnut stage 1 right now- but if I should go to the natural kind or to gerber or whatever, I would like to know.

I am assuming after I start this is when the poop will begin to smell to high heavens.. :lmao:

Looking forward to input.

1) Try giving it to her alone first. If she blicks at it, mix it with a little cereal or formula. Fruit only, though - mixing cereal with green beans is just wrong.

2) I would introduce one new food at a time, that way if she develops an intolerance you'll know exactly what caused it.

3) I made my own baby food. With the commercial stuff, go with whatever has the least amount of additives - check the label. Baby peas should be pureed peas and that's it.

The REAL stench comes when you start feeding her meat. :faint:

And one more bit of advice:

You don't want to mess up her poopies, so watch her BM situation after introducing a new food. Fruit may loosen her up, but veggies may make her stools too hard. Just keep an eye on it.

the meat just sounds nasty.. like those little sausages.. EWW YUCK! they make me cringe.....:faint:

Also- looking at the label it says "butternut squash and water ness. for preperation".. so I think I am good there....

I worked with infants for @ 3 years (total) in various daycare settings. I made my own food after observing those who had homemade vs. store bought. The transition to table food was much easier for the babies who had been brought up with food their parents made and they were much less picky eaters. My son still eats just about everything put in front of him. My guess is there is more texture to homemade so going to "real food" @ 1 year, is not that big of a stretch. Also, less additives/sugar, boy doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, so we don't have to fight over candy, etc.

My mom gave me a mini food processor, we simply put in our veggies/fruit that we were eating on any given night, one of our servings were 2-3 for the baby...

One more bit of advice... you may want to stick to just introducing the veggies to her until she gets used to them. Once they taste the wonders of fruit, they start to expect all food to taste that yummy and tend to turn the noses at the veggies.

Have a camera ready when you introduce new foods! The look on their face is priceless if they don't like it:lmao:

My son's two most favoritest finger foods were Vienna sausages and braunschweiger on toast.

One more tip - I made the mistake of pureeing canned green beans for my son. He ended up with sodium burns all over his butt because of all the salt in those things, even after I drained and rinsed them. So if you're going to make your own baby food, use fresh veggies and fruits only.

:barf: Wouldn't they be a choking hazard to little kids, like hot dogs?
braunschweiger on toast
:yum: Still one of my favorites. :yay: Must be the German in me coming out. It seems unusual a little kid would like it, but he's got good taste.

No because hot dogs are firmer and they have a casing. Vienna sausages are just barely formed moosh and have a much softer consistency.

2 months and on baby food? Seems young to me. And your dr. didn't explain about how to introduce foods? I always thought they started fruits around 4 months or so. You feed the same thing, like pears, for 5 days, then introduce another one. Then introduce veggies, like squash, which is fairly bland..and move on from there.

Seems young to me, too, but I guess all doctors are different. I did cereal at 4 mos. for both kids, and then slowly started on veggies after that. We got through all the veggies, and then moved onto fruits.

That's exactly how I did it...:yay:

Both of mine started cereal @ 4 months (in their bottle) neither started baby food until they were at least 6 months old. We started w/ cereals and veggies and then to fruits. I never remember my oldest being fed the meats, but my little one loves them and the combo (turkey and rice, etc).

Yeah - I did straight cereal for a couple of months, and veggies probably started around 6 months.

It's been so long ago I can't even remember when I started feeding my kids anything other than breast milk/formula and cereal. I think probably 3 or 4 months is when I started spoon feeding them and I might have added a little applesauce to the cereal.

It seems to me they were both able to sit upright before I got them going on straight fruits and veggies. I know Doug was crawling when I fed him the salt-poisoned green beans. :twitch: So he must have been a good - what? - 6 or 8 months?
