Baby Food

It has been a really long time since my kids were this young but I thought as the baby's digestive tract was still developing there were no solid foods for the first four months. Has the mentality on this changed over the years?

That is pretty much what I did per "moms" advice(who raised 6 healthy children)and my ped. But there are some peds out there that are complete idiots.

2 months and on baby food? Seems young to me.
:yeahthat:  I think we started DQ on cereal around 3-4 months, and it was slowly added in greater quantities to her bottled milk till it was too thick and time to move to a bowl.

At the risk of sounding judgemental (which I'm not trying to do), what's the rush to get her on foods already?

Hi, I'm new to the forum, but not excatly new. I joined up in the earliest year and now, I'm back. :howdy:

About your baby food, I didn't feed my son the baby food until he was 6 months old. I fed him Beechnut green bean stage 1 at 6 months old, he liked it. The doctor said to feed him one new vegetable a week, so you can rule out the allegry or any other possible problems. After your baby have tried all the vegetables, you can start one new fruit a week and then move onto meat. Using the same steps as the first two foods group. You can feed fruits and vegetables after starting on meats because you know the baby is not allergy or have problems. I'm trying to say that you can feed fruit/vegetable first and then feed the baby new meat, so that the way they will be opening their mouth already. If any problems pop up during new meat week, it usually is because of the meat. The funny thing is that my son won't eat the meats at all and still to this date. He is almost 2 years old now.

As for baby cereal food, I was told by the doctor never ever put cereal in the bottle because it is too thick and the baby could choke on it, so I never put it in the bottle. I spoon fed my baby.

Two tips of knowing when the baby is ready for solid baby food or cereals are that they can sit up unassisted and stopped sticking thier tongue out during the feeding time. Babies stick thier tongue out when they are sucking on the bottle nipples or during the breastfeeding stage.

My best suggestion is talk to the doctor to see if it is okay to feed your baby the food. The doctor once told me that if you introduced the baby food too soon, they could develop type 2 diabetic and be overweight kid as they are growing up. I don't know this for fact, but if the doctor said it, and I believe him that he know what the best for the babies. You won't hurt the baby at all even if you start early or late.

Please "PM" me if you have any questions.

Congratulation on your new baby!

Seems young to me, too, but I guess all doctors are different. I did cereal at 4 mos. for both kids, and then slowly started on veggies after that. We got through all the veggies, and then moved onto fruits.
I started my daughter on cereal & baby food at about 2 months w/out consulting my doctor. In fact, I didn't rely on my doctor for much of anything, unless she was sick.

I had a big baby, and she grew fast! At two months old, she needed something heavier that wouldn't leave her hungry an hour later. Almost 9 years later and she's tall and thin.

LOL! I knew that. I have been reading the forum for years, so I know how mean the people can get. My old screenname to this forum was lost. I lost it because it have been unactive for years. Been too busy to create a new account because I was attending college full time and took all my classes online.

Congratulation on your daughter! Every babies are different and have different needs. You did what the best for your daughter at the time. Type 2 Diabetic is a genetic on my husband's side of the family, so I was a bit nervous to do anything new unless I talk to the doctor first.

Alright- I have been told that it's ok to start the baby food, stage 1, when she hit 2 mths old. Well, she is there. Now, my questions are:

1) should I always mix the baby food for right now with cereal or can it be done alone

2) should I only work with 1 type, such as 1 fruit and then a week later, 1 veggie or can I/should I do a fruit and veggie at the same time

3) Any particular brand better than the other? I got beechnut stage 1 right now- but if I should go to the natural kind or to gerber or whatever, I would like to know.

I am assuming after I start this is when the poop will begin to smell to high heavens.. :lmao:

Looking forward to input.

Congrats on the new baby!

My son is going on 8 months now, and we started him on fruits around 4 months. My doctor recommended we start him on fruits because he was a breastfed baby. Breast milk is sweet, so we were told that he would probably take the fruits better starting out as opposed to the more bland vegetables. It worked great, and he eats like a champ! We started veggies around 6 months, and he takes those great as well. We probably won't try meats until around 9 months, because meats apparently cause more allegeric reactions in infants than fruits&veggies do. I mix cereal with both the fruits and veggies to weigh it down some...it definitely keeps the spitting up to a minimum!

As some of the others have said, each baby is different. You will know what works best for yours. I love my baby's pediatrician, but I know my baby better than anyone (including the doc), so I just go with what feels right by following my son's cues.
