There's an accident on 235 in front of Expedition/Exploration. Anybody hear what caused it?
I saw it close-up earlier when I was trying to enter in to the parking lot, but the access road was closed because of this accident. Helo just landed ready to transport someone to the hospital. One car looked banged up badly, but the accident didn't seem to justify all the activity that's out there right now.

I heard "chest pain" on the scanner, so it could be cardiac.

Four people to be transported, so there must have been a hard impact.

I just walked out there. I love that helicopter!

Friends of the gal who sits next to me. Unofficial story, high school student claims he was cut off, swerved to avoid accident and ended up being in one. The vehicle that caused the accident is long gone.

Ego, stupidity, a lack of skill and not realizing that if you're controlling 4000 pounds of steel travelling at 88 feet per second, that should be the primary focus of your attention.
Same as all the others.

No kidding! I never had a fear of bridges until me and my friend were going to go to OC for the weekend. Once we got onto the Bay Bridge, she decides she's scared to death of bridges, and tells me she might pass out! (too late to trade places now, we were already on the bridge). :faint:

Well, damn. I've gone over that bridge close to a hundred times now, and never worried about it.* After reading this thread, though, now I'll have a white-knuckle grip on the wheel, waiting for one of these panicky types to swerve into me.

*there was that one time my car was stalling, at night, in heavy rain, and I wasn't sure we'd make it to the top of the bridge, but I prefer not to think about that trip anymore.

I'll give it a shot later this summer. We are buying a trailer, I think, so we can trailer over to the Shenendoah. I don't want to ride thru Fredericksburg just yet.
Fredericksburg is a piece of cake.. Nothing compared to driving around here. AND it's a nice ride to get there. You can ride with me to go to Morton's next time I need to buy some farkle, you'll see what I mean..

Next time I go through, I'm going to go through old town and get on Fall Hill Ave. to River Rd. Comes out on Rt.3 in Chancellorsville. Skip all the "bypass" traffic.

IMHO-having traffic operating in both directions on the Bay Bridge IS an accident waiting to happen-that's a whole 'nuther issue.
This was an avoidable accident-all due to someone's carelessness. Damnnn shame-I feel for the families and friends of the victims!

I don't think it's a risk having 2 way traffic on the bridge.....it's no different than a regular 2 lane road with no shoulder. You SOMDers are spoiled with those huge-ass shoulders.

I know that people are afraid of bridges, but the lanes on the bridge are the same as the lanes on a regular road. Just stay in your lane (which hopefully you're doing anyways) and you won't have a problem. I've never had an issue with bridges...once I got stuck on the Solomon's bridge (almost at the top) for 3 hours because of an accident.

It's terrible that the jackass pulling the trailer didn't use the safety chains. It was probably a knee-jerk reaction of the other drivers to swerve.....but the trailer was only 4'X6'....the shoulda just hit it. I imagine the driver of the SUV that was pulling the trailer is going live with that guilt for the rest of his/her life.

For his/her broke life. The lawsuits are gonna be piling up big and I doubt they will have a house to live in once it's all said and done.

:yeahthat: What do you think they might charge him/her with? Is it enough for vehicular manslaughter? Negligence? The safety chain thing is the clincher....

The lanes are actually wider than regular roads, so it really shouldn't be a problem.

The bridge may be an irrational fear, but just like all irrational fears it is very real to those who have it.

Has anyone heard more about the victims? Have names been released?

 Fredericksburg is easier than 235 in the afternoon.
Traveling through Fredricksburg is a hassle, especially past 95. 235 is a familiar journey punctuated by brief sphincter puckering moments. At least though, it only takes 10 minutes to pass through the stretch I use. :lmao:

Would a safety chain actually hold at 65MPH? Wouldn't the trailer start whipping around pretty violently at that speed? If the driver slowed when the trailer came undone, wouldn't there be a bad jack-knife? Do we even know if the driver didn't use chains? Maybe it was just a simple mechanical failure....

There were pics of the shiny new UNDAMAGED safety chains wrapped around the trailer hitch on the news last night.
