i'd like to borrow one so i'd know how fast i'm going. my speedo is off about 5mph (i think)
Truck is bout 3.5 - 4 mph high..

Bike depends on the age of the tire.. (Wear)..

new tire I'm told is almost spot on.. as you get close to replacement can be as much as 5MPH off (high)

Any time you're talking about a speedometer difference you're talking percentage. 5mph at 55mph would be a 9% difference. If you assume a 24" outside diameter tire a change of 9% would be 1" of tread wear if my math is correct (sometimes happens). Are the treads really that thick?

I don't know about 1" but they are pretty damn deep grooves when you get a new tire..

:twitch: Tire wear causes your Speedometer to be off 5MPH?
Of course wear makes a difference.. whether it be 5MPH is arguable, but possible.. But you are going to be on the high side. Moreso on a bike then a car or truck just due to the groove depth on a new bike tire.

Speedo says 65 you might be doing 60...

Odometer is off as well..

Yes a speedometer is off by a percentage. so the faster you are going the more it is off by. Motorcycle speedometers are notorious for being WAY off. Plus factor in tire wear. Along with the fact that different tire manufacturers have different profiles for the same size.

There is a company that makes a speedometer recalibrator called the Yellowbox. Check it out here

I was intially referring to my car, since the wheels I have on it are a little smaller in diameter than the stock ones (visually you cant tell).

desertrat do you work on base?

Yep. I work on Pax. How did you get that? I have larger tires than std on my truck so my speedo is off about 5% . Not really enough to worry about.

I have my sources

Did you see the MPH calculation? It's below the two wheels on the link.

Actually you are close.. a change in diameter of 1 inch would equate to the loss of 1/2 inch tread.. (1/2 lost on the top of the tire, 1/2 lost on the bottom of the tire) so VERY feasible..

I'm figuring circumference for a 24 inch tire, subtracting 10%, then figuring the diameter of the new smaller tire.. = <> 23 in diameter OR 1 inch lost in diameter, 1/2 inch tread wear.
