Mine don't have a red belly just red on his head. What's the downey look like?

That is a red bellied woodpecker..red cap and the black & white stripes. The downey is a little fellow with black and white stipes.

Once in a while, we have a Pileated Woodpecker in the back yard. Those suckers are huge!

Do you have a list with pictures for this area? I can remember that... now I need to sort out all these little brown birds and some grey ones. I've seen a few blue birds too. Is that their technical name? Blue bird? They are round and fat and I think have orangish wings or bellies... I don't remember.
Eastern bluebird. Bright blue with a reddish brown breast and white belly.

Yes, they are. I saw one on a wood pile..looked like the real Woody Woodpecker.

We even had a pheasant wandering around for about a week.

I saw one of those a few days ago... I thought it was my black and white zebra looking friend but noticed it didn't have a red head. I then thought maybe it was the female version or something... how do I tell the difference between the female and males of those?

google is your friend.

There is a red headed woodpecker too, but he doesn't have the stripes...and his whole head is red. The pileated woodpecker is much, much larger than the one you described.

This bird was at our feeder at the end of this past summer. It's a Rose Breasted Grossbeak. It's not too common to see them around here.

Aha! found it.. its the checklist ... you type in your zip code and they give you a list of birds in your area... and then if you are not sure... you click on the link... I can study that :yahoo: If anyone else can participate... here's the link for this! http://gbbc.birdsource.org/gbbcApps/checklist

the downey and hairy are identical except for the size. The hairy is slightly larger. Both have horizontal black and white stripes on their back (ladder back type) and the males have a red spot on the back of their heads, female do not.
