the downey and hairy are identical except for the size. The hairy is slightly larger. Both have horizontal black and white stripes on their back (ladder back type) and the males have a red spot on the back of their heads, female do not.cattitude said:That is a red bellied woodpecker..red cap and the black & white stripes.
