Blue City State Schadenfreude - Elections have Consequences

I met a young mother this week who had just fled Portland, Ore., with her husband and toddler. She revealed in hushed tones in case someone on the street might hear that she had to get out because drug addicts had set up a squat in her yard and the city wouldn’t get rid of these dangerous people.

She’s not the only one who has fled this city. Businesses have bailed, middle-class families have gotten the hell out, and others who thought it was a safe place to live have reevaluated their priorities, quietly sold their homes, and moved.

Do you know what will fix that? A mayor and a police force willing to do it. What’s not going to fix it is a turd-polishing ad campaign, borrowed state police, more government fentanyl camps, consequence-free open-air drug markets, and tax breaks for friends in high places.

Naturally, those are some of the ideas being promoted by Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, who along with the unfortunately-named Tina Kotek, Oregon’s governor, are working on a secret-blue-ribbon-task-force-committee-to-end-all-committees-we’re-really-gonna-fix-it-this-time confab to “revive” Portland, which was a perfectly fine city before they took over and ran it into the ground.

Portland’s on the doom loop trail like San Francisco. There’s now a 30% commercial real estate vacancy rate in the same downtown area riven by Antifa and BLM riots. The bluest areas of Oregon were closed down during the pandemic, but the riots were encouraged — by the same people.

I’m a city councilman fighting for CVS and other stores to pay a $5,000 tax on each self-checkout – enough is enough

Devon Reid, an Evanston, Illinois, elected official, proposed a tax that would hit big-box retailers with an annual charge of $5,000 for each kiosk they use.

Reid wishes to take all of the collected tax money and distribute it to job programs for teens and young adults.

The proposal came after he blamed retailers like CVS, Target, and Whole Foods for erasing hourly jobs that are important for low-income families.

"Working these summer jobs and part-time jobs during the school year helps their family make ends meet," he said of teen cashiers.

"So I wanna make sure that we are continuing to have those opportunities for folks throughout our community."

🔥 Game over, Portlanders! Late last week, the Oregonian ran a story headlined, “Nike to permanently close NE Portland factory store, business district says.” Nike is shutting down its 40-year-old flagship store and scampering out of downtown Portland on its fastest sneakers.

image 3.png

Nike cited crime and safety concerns. The Oregonian described the now-closed Nike Community Store as “a staple in its Portland neighborhood, once the core of the city’s black population, since it opened in June 1984.” The woke store not only hired local workers from the neighborhood, but it also invested all the store’s profits into Portland’s black community.

In other words, Nike wasn’t even running the store to make money. It was just a virtue-signaling operation. And it still couldn’t make it.

The article mentioned that increasingly-desperate Nike recently offered to partially fund Portland’s police department in exchange for getting an off-duty police officer to help watch the store. But Portland is in the business of defunding police departments, not funding them. Portland rejected Nike’s offer like it was a box of unwanted last-season sneaker models.

According to an Oregon Live analysis of IRS data, Multnomah County, where Portland is located, last year hemorrhaged 14,257 taxpayers, creating a historic loss of $1 billion in tax revenues. Fox 12 News ranked Portland as one of America’s “fastest shrinking cities.”

For the life of me, I can’t understand why.

Portland’s controlled demolition is going great! The good news is, it will be over soon.

Washington DC is now so crime-ravaged locals are driving tiny distances instead of walking and are too scared to go out during the day, as woke city sees homicides spike by 29% in a YEAR

  • There have been 190 murders in Washington DC this year, putting the city on track this year to overtake 2021 - with 227 - as the bloodiest in two decades

Five Years Later, Philadelphia's Soda Tax Is Falling Flat

Want a soda? You'll pay more for one in Philadelphia, because five years ago, local politicians decided to tax it.

They're "protecting" people, they said. The tax would "reduce obesity" and "lower diabetes rates."

But their main goal was to bring in more money, which they said would "fund early childhood education" and "help a lot of families."

I reported on this five years ago, right after the tax went into effect.

My new video updates what happened.

Store owners hated the new tax.

"Bad tax!" said Melvin Robinson, who runs Bruno's Pizza. He says few customers now buy soda from him.

One of his customers told me, "I refuse to buy soda in Philadelphia."

"Twenty-ounce soda, almost $3!" complained another.

Bruno's is located right on the outer edge of Philadelphia, so his customers can cross the street and buy untaxed soda.

But they still go back to Bruno's for pizza. "Best slice in town!" gushed one.

I confronted then–City Councilman William Greenlee with the store owners' complaints.

"Nothing else that we could come up with could raise that kind of funding," he said.

Soda taxes are disproportionately paid by poor people. Even Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) said, "You don't have to fund child care on the backs of the poorest people!… That's a regressive way."

"It hits the poor most," I repeat to Greenlee.

"I didn't know Bernie opposed it," he laughed. "We're raising enough money to put 2,700 kids in pre-K and to open 11 community schools!"

"Preschool?!?" snarled a Bruno's customer. "I doubt that."

As with most taxes, the soda tax had an unintended consequence: Alcohol sales rose 5 percent.

"People buy more liquor," I shout at Greenlee. "Less Coke, more liquor!"

Greenlee laughs and says, "We have a liquor tax, too!"

Politicians do like their "sin" taxes.

Portland Police Response Times Skyrocket As City Struggles With Crime

“Like other major cities, Portland, Oregon, has experienced a surge in crime and disorder over the past three years,” the report reads. “Unlike other major cities, Portland is uniquely ill-equipped to deal with this problem, because its police department is uniquely understaffed.”

The city’s shootings spiked after Floyd’s death, reaching a 26-year record in 2020 and setting all-time homicide records in 2021 and 2022. Portland followed the “defund the police” movement, slashing $15 million from the PPB’s budget and cutting the number of sworn officers by 8 percent.

“Property crimes have surged,” the report reads. “Public disorder, in the form of camping and public drug use, is rampant.”

The year following Floyd’s death, one in every 1,000 black Portland residents was murdered.

“The effects of this crime wave fell disproportionately on those whom protesters claimed to help,” the authors found. “The city set homicide records in the past two years and is facing a wave of shootings that has not yet receded.”

The Bay Area is still struggling to recover from 'defund the police' (now they're hoping Texas can help)

Three years after “defund the police” became a BLM rallying cry, San Francisco and other Bay Area cities are still trying to recover from the brief popularity that phrase once had with mayors and city councils. San Francisco is still down hundreds of police officers and has come up with a new plan to attract more recruits: Go to Texas.

The San Francisco Police Department is visiting four Texas university campuses through September as part of new recruiting efforts to find candidates outside of California.
For the first time, police officer candidates will be tested outside of California, with a written test, a physical ability test and an oral interview.

An announcement was made on X a couple weeks ago.

They've tried to move the narrative that so very much of the crime is just antagonism from the police - that the police are reacting from profiles, negative stereotypes and are provoking the people. Hence their solution - defund them. Lower the police presence, and the antagonism will diminish.

Well that didn't happen. If you were heavily invested in the idea that COPS WERE THE PROBLEM - that they were chasing down, beating, harassing and otherwise being a Gestapo to people of color - what would be your next move? You double down on stupid - get RID of the police.

That didn't work. You don't have to be racist or prejudicial to know that crime isn't provoked by law enforcement - it's encouraged by the lack of it.

🔥 The UK Daily Mail ran a story Thursday headlined, “Progressive Seattle activists take over city council meeting with cries of 'you have blood on your hands' after public drug use is recriminalized.

image 6.png

This week Seattle’s city council dipped its wee little toe into pushing back, slightly, against the City’s controlled demolition. According to the Seattle Times, the new ordinance only recommends arrest for folks found with or using drugs — but only when that person “presents a threat of harm to others.”

It’s pretty wild to consider that, before the new ordinance, arrests weren’t recommended in Seattle when homeless druggies posed a threat to others. In any case, even that scrap of common sense was just too much for three commissioners and Seattle’s battalion of woke leftists and open drug advocates, who — momentarily sober — repeatedly shouted “blood on your hands” at the top of their lungs during the vote:

image 5.png

The Mail reported that during the pandemic, Seattle’s homeless population — completely unburdened by laws against public drug use — grew by +38%, for some reason. Currently some 40,000 people are “living outside” in King County.

Meanwhile, Seattle’s luckless, taxpaying citizens, who chose working and living responsibly over being high all the time, have been suffering the whole time. Here’s a July Seattle Times headline that’s uproariously hilarious to everyone except people who live in Seattle:

image 7.png

According to the article, the City refused to do anything about the vagrants, the drugs, or their awesome inflatable swimming pool. I know you want to see it. Here it is!:

image 8.png

You have to give them credit for being resourceful. A little swimming exercise might be good for them. But you’d think they wouldn’t be concentrate long enough to buy, install, and fill that pool. Dude, what were we doing again? Do you suppose Amazon Prime delivered it?

Jason Billingsley, suspected of killing Forbes '30 Under 30' tech CEO Pava LaPere, 26, linked to knifepoint sex attack a WEEK earlier: 6ft 4, 305lb ex-con was let out by Soros-backed DA EARLY despite history of sex offenses and violent crimes

Billingsley faces charges of first-degree murder, assault and reckless endangerment in the killing of 26-year-old LaPere, a rising star in tech who made the prestigious Forbes '30 Under 30' list.

The 6ft 4, 305lbs suspect had been jailed for 30 years in 2015, was set free by progressive, George Soros-backed District Attorney Marilyn Mosby in October 2022 - just seven years into his sentence. It is unclear why he was released so swiftly.

LaPere was found dead on Monday morning at her Baltimore apartment with blunt force injuries that one veteran officer described to DailyMail.com as 'absolutely brutal – some of the worst I've seen.'

I happened to be reading the post on this in the MD subreddit. A few of the lefties were trying to blame Baltimore County for Baltimore City's troubles.
