Sounds like LOTS of fun (NOT!). The nice thing about doing it yourself is that you get it exactly the way you want it, and you know that you can fix it if anything ever happens to it in the future. Congrats.
The only thing I regret it I should have sawed off the door casings and gone under them instead of nibbling the pattern out of the tile and going around. Live and learn.

I've heard others comment about the relation between allergies and carpet as well. Good luck! I really want solid wood floors; I like the look of the lines and rustic feel vs. the flat laminate, but both are beautiful when done right! :yay:

We need to refinish our wood floors in the house. They aren't bad but a good sanding job and a good wood sealer would not be a bad idea!!

That's my next project. I'm putting in a wood laminate flooring in the kitchen, dinning room and living room. The carpet has got to go. Hopefully it will help my allergies.

You are also supposed to remove all fabric curtains.

When we remodeled a couple of years ago, we tore out all the wall-to-wall carpeting. My wife and I leveled up the floors as best we could, and then we laid wood-look laminate flooring over an insulating pad and plastic. It came out very well and is holding up great. We did every room except the bedroom and bathrooms. Putting it in the laundry room was a mistake, though. We had a washer that leaked bleach onto the floor for a year or so and it really ruined the flooring there.

I'm might be good at home improvement, but when it comes to curtains, etc. I wouldn't know my azz from a hole in the ground. What kind of curtains am I supposed to get? Or just go with blinds?

Depends on how bad your allergies are. Roller shades and a valance? Or maybe just make sure to keep your drapes vacuumed. Curtains cozy up a home so I don't go with the "no drapes" theory.

That's why I'm putting in laminate. My folks have real hardwood flooring throughout the entire house and every few years Dad would have us sanding the floors down and putting shellac on them. I hated doing that, but I'm thankful my father was a carpenter. He taught me alot. Now I just don't have the time to do the things I want to do around the house.

Right now I have blinds with just the decorative curtains, I guess that's what you'd call a valance. When I think of a valence, I think of the wooden valences that you put around the top of the windows. Allergies are bad. I'm currently getting allergy shots, but they haven't had any affect yet.

Cornice is the wooden thingie above the window..Is dust one of your allergies?

I'm too picky. I want things done the way I want them. Now maybe next year I'll have someone build a garage for me because that's something I don't want to tackle by myself. If my Dad were still in good health, I'd get him and my brothers down here and we'd do it.

You are partially correct. It all depends on the conditions of your slab. If you have any water seepage, you don't want real wood. As it is, I don't think I have any issues with water (except for the back wall with the crack that I caulked and sealed last winter). Once I get it all cleaned out, I plan to paint the entire floor and below grade walls with the waterproofing paint that I used on the cracked wall just to insure that there is no water coming up thru the slab in the future. Gonna caulk (with the waterproofing caulking) along the joint between the slab and the wall and then paint.

How do you know if you have a problem with water in your basement? I have never physically seen any water in basement, I havent seen any mold growing, and I dont have a mildewy smell... Is that a good sign that there is no water seepage?

True ... Norm's a hottie too! Does he still have his own show now up in New England (at least, that's where it was set) where he makes all kinds of furniture and crap? I used to watch that when I'd wake up early on weekends.

Yes, they still broadcast NYW. Just not locally. Check out his website. If you want, you can have him come into your home by purchasing any or all of his videotapes and measured drawrings. http://www.newyankee.com/index.shtml
