I think I read somewhere that wood flooring is not recommended for sub-ground-level flooring; that you should go with a laminate type wood-look flooring instead. Might wanna check into that.huntr1 said:Debating whether to tile, wood or carpet the floor in the basment when I do it.
I think they're both goobers, but that's just my observation.DoWhat said:Are you saying you are better than Pete?
Hope it's level if you're going to tile it. My friend had some idiot tile his room, cement floor and the floor was anything but level. Needless to say the tile job did not last long. Tile popping up and cracking everywhere.huntr1 said:Debating whether to tile, wood or carpet the floor in the basment when I do it. If I tile it, I am going with larger tiles and smaller grout lines. You are partially correct. It all depends on the conditions of your slab. If you have any water seepage, you don't want real wood. As it is, I don't think I have any issues with water (except for the back wall with the crack that I caulked and sealed last winter). Once I get it all cleaned out, I plan to paint the entire floor and below grade walls with the waterproofing paint that I used on the cracked wall just to insure that there is no water coming up thru the slab in the future. Gonna caulk (with the waterproofing caulking) along the joint between the slab and the wall and then paint.crabcake said:I think I read somewhere that wood flooring is not recommended for sub-ground-level flooring; that you should go with a laminate type wood-look flooring instead. That's my next project. I'm putting in a wood laminate flooring in the kitchen, dinning room and living room. The carpet has got to go. Hopefully it will help my allergies.crabcake said:I think I read somewhere that wood flooring is not recommended for sub-ground-level flooring; that you should go with a laminate type wood-look flooring instead. I'll get back to you in about 10 years. That is my current schedule for completion of all currently planned home improvement projects.bresamil said:Dear Pete, Vince, and Huntr1:

Floor in my townhouse was level, with the exception of 1 corner, which was 1" lower than the rest of the room. It was visible with the naked eye. I poured some floor leveling cement in there first to bring it up level, and then tiled.Vince said:Hope it's level if you're going to tile it. I've heard others comment about the relation between allergies and carpet as well. Good luck! I really want solid wood floors; I like the look of the lines and rustic feel vs. the flat laminate, but both are beautiful when done right!Vince said:That's my next project. Speaking of wood and working with it, I have a guy that is supposed to be giving me a couple hundred board feet of poplar. It was cut into boards by his father, and stored in the garage over 30 years ago. Father has passed away and son (who is in his mid-late 40's) doesn't want it.Vince said:Hope it's level if you're going to tile it. I want to put in the laminate flooring that is in the produce section of the Safeway in La Plata. It looks like old barn wood. Has texture and everything.crabcake said:I've heard others comment about the relation between allergies and carpet as well. Good luck! I hire people. Gets done a lot quicker.huntr1 said:That is my current schedule for completion of all currently planned home improvement projects.
Mine was an entryway that narrowed, went to a hallway, then down a hall and into a bathroom. It was fine, my neighbor helped one day to get the lines snapped. I worked on it as I had time. I used 12x12 with .25. The hard part was getting the linolium off that had been there for 27 years.huntr1 said:145 sq ft. is a nice warmup. I tiled the floor in the basment in the old house. 300 sq. ft. A 1 sq. ft. section took as long as the 240 sq. ft. family room. Lots of intricate cuts. Ifn ya had told me you were doing it, I woulda come help.

Sounds like LOTS of fun (NOT!). The nice thing about doing it yourself is that you get it exactly the way you want it, and you know that you can fix it if anything ever happens to it in the future. Congrats.Pete said:Mine was an entryway that narrowed, went to a hallway, then down a hall and into a bathroom. It was fine, my neighbor helped one day to get the lines snapped.
