Boy got suspended today

Well, absolutely no decision was made yesterday - with any luck I'll hear something today. All the principal did was accept our letter of appeal - she wouldn't even discuss the situation with us because while all the reports and evidence collected concerning the fight were on her desk, she has not had time to review them. I plan on calling the school every hour today "the squeaky wheel gets oiled" theory!

I'm not sure I understand what there is to appeal? If fighting isn't allowed in school, and he knows that, and he admits to landing a punch, then he has admittedly broken the rules and needs to be accountable for his actions.

Now, as his parent, for the reasons stated above, I probably wouldn't be too unhappy about this suspension. But overall, big picture, children need to be accountable for their actions when they break known rules.

I don't necessarily agree with you Oz. Many years ago I had an icecream cone rubbed on my back at lunch. I let it go, so he came back and did it again. I chased the guy out of the cafeteria and outside where I caught up to him and almost choked him to death. He was somewhat bigger than I. With my arm around his throat he said he wouldn't do it again. I let him breath and headed back in. Then he wanted to fight me, so I went to the office, told them what happened and he was suspended for a week. No punishment for me, plus he never attempted to pick on me again. The same dude wanted later to fight one of my friends and after being on the receiving end of a fist to the face finally decided maybe he wasn't the baddest dude around.

I'm not saying her boy did anything wrong by defending himself. But what the heck - he did throw a punch in school - let him take 5 days off keep up with his homework, and brush up on his Xbox Madden 2007... :yay:

:yeahthat: I told Kalisa that if someone else throws the first punch/hair-pull/biatch-slap, they're fair game, and I'll back her without a doubt 100% of the time. And if it's a boy who does that or shoves her, she is to hesitate not in giving him a good swift soccer kick in the balls. :bubble:

its too late if they get in the first punch just kick their AZZ :smack:

I finally snapped and bent him backwards over a cafeteria table and worked his face til I got pulled off him. He never picked on me again, and all his buddies started treating me better too. In fact, I never got picked on ever again.

In my case, that is what I hoped would happen. But it never worked - kids kept making fun of me and laughing at me, and bullies kept trying to mess with me. I wonder if they just wanted to see how I would react, like I was a laboratory animal or something. I didn't know it at the time, but other kids found my physical and social awkwardness to be funny. At the time, it felt like there was something about me that was bringing out the worst in people.

One time in my group counseling in middle school, I did something clumsy and the other boys laughed. So I threw a chair across the floor at them to get them to stop. A few minutes later I was overcome with guilt and shame for losing control of my anger.

The Principal called last night to say that her investigation has been completed and that she will allow boy to return to school immediately, the suspension is being expunged from his record and he will be allowed to make up all work missed to date. :cartwheel

Good to hear! Please elaborate on the "will be allowed to make up all work missed to date" part... Folks on here had me convinced that wasn't an issue for suspension...:eyebrow:

Why wouldn't it be an issue? If you are suspended from school, I would think that would mean all activities, including any assignments.

Go back and read this thread.

 Better than being beat up on a regular basis or seriously injured.

When I was a kid being suspended (for ANY reaon) wasn't an excuse for not doing your homework. Students called classmates for the assignments, completed them as best they could, or received a failing grade for incomplete work.

Quoted for Chasey...:duh:

I went back and found this, too:

Gotcha... I didn't realize they would let them make the work up... I thought it would be treated like an unexcused abscence.

My son has been raised knowing we will back him if he choses to defend himself. If he feels hitting back is the right thing to do at the time, I support that decision.

I think someone should call either Great Mills or Leonardtown HS to get the correct answer.

I think I'm gonna just :lalala: unless it becomes an issue I am faced with... Boy mentioned yesterday that some dude bucked up against him and after he grabbed him by the shoulders and proceeded to shove him forward about 10 feet and then look at him and said, "So who you pushing?" The kid just sat down and didn't even look at him the rest of the class. We are only in 9th grade so far... I imagine I'll be bumping this thread at some point...

The Principal said that boy will be allowed four days to complete any assignments, tests, etc., that were given during his absence. The day after his suspension, I went to see his guidance counselor and requested any and all work from his teachers for the next five days - all of his teacher complied and gave me the work. Now that the suspension is being expunged, he has an additional four days (the actual amount of time his was out of school) to complete this work and turn it in. Otherwise, in order to get credit for the work he would have had to complete it all and turn it in the first day after his suspension ended. Basically, he just got a four day vacation from school without any consequences.

I just looked up suspension rules in the SMCPS Student handbook and there is no mention whatsoever of class work. No mention that it can be made up or not made up. It may very well be on a case by case basis depending on the reason for the suspension.
