Brake Job... hhhhmmm

A hydraulic system (your brakes) needs to be closed to transmit pressure from one place to another.

If the caliper goes away, there is suddenly an open line, the brake fluid goes away and you have no brakes.

ABS is a computer control system that prevents the wheels from locking up in a panic stop and allows you to steer the car instead of just sliding.

and..... most cars today are equipped with ABS; so there's and ID10T light on the dashboard somwhere that says, "ABS", and will indicate that something is amiss within the normally "closed" system.

When that "ABS" light comes on, I usually start with the master cylinder to check for proper brake fluid level; then work my way to each caliper. Sometimes there is just air in the system; bleeding it will usually fix the problem. Further inspection will of course locate any "real" problem.

(1) If they charge me $25 per rotor to turn them and I can get new ones for $60 per rotor, I'll get the new ones and save myself time and trouble. (2) Some rotors you can't turn to specs so you're stuck buying new anyway. (3) they're easy to replace when you're replacing the pads, but all this is dependent upon doing the job yourself.

You don't say for what car, but I've found rotors online for about $40 per pair.

Less than half of what the local auto parts stores want.

And agree with what you say, juat add that it's possible to find new rotors for less than what they charge to turn old ones.

If SoMdDude doesn't know what the ABS system is, a warning light probably won't help him if his caliper falls off

I thought the ABS system was not only anti-lock, but sensed caliper failure and cut off that cylinder from the others so they didn't fail. Maybe because this is an earlier model (rear drum brakes) it doesn't have that. I remember that was a feature in my 2000 GMC truck.

Have to look it up and refresh my memory.

If it's the same thing that I think it is, Bob just changed one for us last week. :yay:

Mass Air Flow Sensor?

Do you like apples?
You're talking to the girl who could barely do the headlight! :killingme

That's the thing! Threw a check engine light, had it read, the car is running no different though.

Hey Pixie - Nice Headlights! :hot:

Sorry - you opened the door and I couldn't resist commenting on it. :huggy:

You'll probably start getting really bad gas mileage..

MAF's tend to not go bad all at once, but it will warn you before it becomes a real problem child.

A bad MAF, sooner or later, will result in a really poorly running car.. bad idle.. no high RPM..stalling.. etc..

BUT depending on the car, it could be just a dirty air filter too.. or air filter box When was the last time you checked/replaced your air filter??

 headlights can be a real PITA but MAFs are usually pretty easy. They're in the hose/tube between the air filter and intake manifold

Power with Control
If its just dirty, a MAF can be cleaned, a simple spray of cleaner in the intake right after the airbox. Most vehicles, a simple hose clamp seals the intake pipe to the MAF, and can be popped off, spray cleaner, follow directions.
