PORTLAND, Ore. - The sheriff in charge of the 9-day-old search for two climbers on Mount Hood gave up any hope Wednesday of finding them alive.

“We’ve done everything we can at this point,” Sheriff Joe Wampler said.

He said the operation is now a “recovery effort.”

Be careful about being too sad. Some shmuck might say you have sympathy for the stupid. My prayers go out their families.

thanks for the shmuck comment, much appreciated.

you can be sad to hear about the presumed deaths of complete strangers, but just don't call it a tragedy, because the outcome was not unforseeable.

Just cause it was forseeable does not mean that it was not a tragedy. The definiton reads as follows: a lamentable, dreadful, or fatal event or affair; calamity; disaster. So in correct terms it was a tragedy. My heart goes out to the families of the fallen climbers.

It's not a tragedy. Tragedy happens because of circumstances beyond anyone's control. These people were in complete control of their decision to climb that mountain in snowy wintery conditions.

Too bad they didn't love their families just a little bit more and their mountain climbing a little less.

I know military men and women who love their families yet they are fighter pilots, ground pounders and even astronauts and they do what they do because they love what they do and they love their country. They take risks everyday and put themselves in harms way because they want to and their duties put them there. Remember they put themselves in there because we have an all volunteer military.

Those men loved the thrill of climbing mountains. How dare anyone say they loved their families less than there passion for what they do. Tell any one of our military members who love their country that they love their country more than family. They are there for love of country and to keep us arguing about what constitutes a tragedy or not. Go ahead and accuse them of not loving their families enough and being dumb azz'es for doing what they love. Those climbers were doing what they loved and it bit them. These things happen.

Rather die doing what I love than die at the hands of some drunk driver or teenager who is crusing down 235 at 100MPH plus.

God, I need a beer.

Well put. The loss of any human life is a tradegy in my book.

A tragedy is an event with a sad outcome. Maybe it was not a tragedy to you and others who did not know these 3 men, but it was to their family. People should not judge others on how they choose to live their lives. Nor should you assume they did not love their families. They were doing something they enjoyed doing and they lost their lives because of it.

What if a member of your family was doing something that they enjoyed doing, but others saw it as wrong and could have been prevented. Would you still feel the same.

Its wonderful that someone else out there sees this. I totally agree with you. People choose to do the things that make them happy weather it is playing with your children or climbing a mountain.

And trust me, I am very grateful for these people, too. These folks are true heros and people to be respected. Don't think for a second that I don't appreciate that some people in this world have helped to ensure my safety, comfort, and happiness.

But I'm confused as to why you would group these three men with their pursuit of self-gratification and thrill-seeking in with the honored men who work every day to protect our nation and our rights and comforts. It seems rather disrespectful to the true heros of our nation.

A hero can be looked at as someone who does something courageous. Maybe we can't compare them to the men and women in our Armed Forces, but if they had survived and successfully climbed the mountain others would have considered them heros because they did something courageous that others would never dare to do.

So whether right or wrong it really doesn't matter - we can't forget the fact that they were 3 human beings that deserve some respect so just let them rest in peace.

It is very sad if they have died, but how much taxpayer money should go to trying to rescue people that put their lives at risk? Just a thought.

You're entitled to your opinion, and I'm entitled to mine. Please don't tell me what to do or how I should feel about this situation. I'm not trying to convert you to my way of thinking....I'm just offering a different opinion.

Courageous and self-gratificaton don't go together. The folks trying to find these guys are courageous, the thrill seeking climbers aren't.
