Breeding my doxie! Help!!!

morningbell

hmmmmmm
I got my Tasha from a bad backyard breeder who had her and 1 other puppy (about 14 weeks old) shoved in a cage so small they were on top of each other. I took her to save her from that woman and whoever she would of just handed the dog over to. I wish I could of taken the other one too. So I figure it was saving a life, just as good as getting from a shelter cause thats where she was going to end up.

I know where your heart is but I never even look at backyard breeders or puppymills, if she was that bad I would have reported her a$$. If we buy a pup from said puppymill then we aren't helping the cause. Your Tasha is georgeous BTW.

most vets i have been to recently are all about the money, and have little to say concerning anyhting that doesn't brind it in....

so why wouldn't you attack her the way you did the poster here?

When did I attack the poster? My vet cares about animals and even has adopting days for rescue animals, has garage sales that I have donated big ticket items to to raise money for rescue groups, sells shirts, mugs, stickers etc with all proceeds going to rescue groups. Sorry your vet is all about pushing product and procedures.

I wanna be a SMIB
I would never visit a puppymill except to steal all the animals. I shouldnt of gone to a breeder but once she showed up I had to take her. My first Shepherd I had, Im pretty sure she was stolen as a puppy by a crackhead and sold to me. I of course found all this out later. But again, once I see them, I got to keep them. same with kittens, thats why I have 4.

I want to take them all too :huggy:

I have always wanted a rescue farm, no joke. If I won the lottery that is what I would do.

Help "Invisible Dogs"
Most vets know absolutely NOTHING about breeding (I said MOST). All they see is a dog they think if pretty, whatever....

Doxie's are showing up in shelters left and right, you can almost guarantee at least 2 pleas a week from a number of shelters trying to save these dogs. TCAS just recently had one that most rescues wouldn't touch - it was absolutely adorable, but it had an attitude from hell.... would bite in a heartbeat. I don't think a rescue ever took it, this poor dog spent 3 weeks in the shelter environment, the shelter kept hoping someone would take it, but we all have enough issue dogs.

The only way these dogs will make a comeback and get out of the shelter is for the BYB's and puppy mills to shut down and let the responsible breeders go back to breeding for the betterment of the breed. (If you don't rescue, don't breed.)

Do you go to Well Pet? That's where I go because they understand and don't put me down because of my breed of choice. If this is where you go, could you let me know more about their "garage sales"? I've never heard about them and want to donate to them because I love them and what they do for the rescue dogs. :yahoo:

Every dachshund I've ever met was like that.

i work in a shelter and i have to see animals go through the pain of ending up in the shelter and as much as you try to give them attention and whatever while they are there, those poor animals would probably never have ended up in such a situation if it wasnt for things like back yard breeders, and any vet that suggests to someone to breed there dog because he/she likes the look of it is guilty of adding to the population of dogs in the millions that are euthanized in this country every year. For a VET to suggest this is very strange and I wouldn't take my animal and entrust it's care with this person as a VET should be concerned about RESPONSIBLE breeding and RESPONSIBLE Breeders.

I think if you're just starting out, this would be a good place to ask the community some questions

Yes, that is why I posted here. Thought that someone would give me some good advice on where to start. I found a breeder in the area and we will be breeding as soon as her dog goes in heat. The dogs will be kept in the area so anyone that would like one PM me.

Thank you all for the great advice!

It is NOT my responsibility or obligation to rescue those that are not on this earth because of me. All i can do is make d@mn sure nothing i bred EVER ends up in that situation by being responsible for them cradle to grave, in writing, and through follow up, which i have done for 30 years. That's my contribution as responsible breeder. First Do No Harm.

It's not the owners with one or two females who are the problem (ie the back yard breeders). It's the peeps who have a barn full, of which there are many around here. The Amish and Menonite look at dogs as a cash crop like cattle, goats or sheep only smaller and more prolific. Quick easy untrackable cash money.

AND with Doxies' especially this one, the Dapple gene must be considered since she has blue eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doubling up on it causes MAJOR health issues.

:tap: Would still like to know who the vet was that made that statement. Reason is I know a vet that "breeds" dachshunds.

But they're a large part of the problem, especially when they pump out puppies every heat cycle and continue to breed their animals that they know have genetic defects. There's certainly enough media coverage of late to make people wary of buying from a puppy mill but a smaller BYB is often thought to be reputable by unsuspecting purchasers. Often these BYB breeders do not have knowledge about the health issues, etc. Unless you are breeding to BETTER the breed, it really doesn't matter the scale of your operation.

Regarding the Amish/Mennonites, as long as people buy their cute little puppies, they'll continue to "make" them.
