Hi all... I'm new to town and I have a golden retriever that is 1 1/2 years old. He was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur (2 months ago) and I'm going to have him checked here on Monday at Breton Vet Hospital. Any reviews for this vet?

I've never used them but heard they were good albeit a bit pricey. I've been with 3 Notch Vets in Hollywood since they opened and have always had great and compassionate care for my pets.

Another one I've not used is All Kinds in Callaway but if you search for them on the forums, you'll see they get great reviews.

I let them clean my dogs teeth. The estimate was $600-$800 range. They called while my dog was sedated to ask me if the could remove a few extra teeth (it would take me outside that estimate range). I ended up paying $1,400.

$1,400!!!!!

But they even gave me my boy's teeth to show me why they chose to remove them.

I stayed with them until we went in for an ear infection. We were "prescribed" 3 medications. I asked if I could get them elsewhere for cheaper, they told me no because they're "prescription". I found 2 of them on the shelf at Petco for much cheaper and the other one was 3 times more expensive than if I had ordered online and that's AFTER paying Breton Vet's $9 fee for writing a prescription that you can take elsewhere.

That was enough for me to feel like they weren't as honest as I'd like them to be.

I have no complaints about the actual care but I found them to be too expensive and less than honest.

A vet in southern Calvert wanted to charge someone to write a prescription for a medicine that could be filled at a pharmacy for a lot less. The pharmacy told this person that it was against the law for a doctor or vet to CHARGE a customer/patient to write a script.

Good Lawd!!! My poodle is really needing his teeth cleaned. It has been a while. I'm looking at $500 and more if any need removed. I trust my vet though (Dr. Langford at Three Notch).

Also NurseSherri I have heard good things about Companion Care in Mechanicsville. There is also a Well Pet Clinic in Lexington Park. They are very reasonable in price but are limited in what they do and their hours are limited. But they are good folks down there.

You asked for and opinion so here it is. I've had a couple of clients use Breton and after the way they were treated I'd go somewhere else. They aren't my stories to tell, I can tell you they were all pretty unhappy.
I've used Companion Care and won't go back there either. They are very nice and have beautiful clinic, but are expensive and tried to add a bunch of stuff to our estimated bill that we didn't want done.
I've used Tidewater for many years, they can be hard to get an appointment sometimes, but they don't overcharge or add extras onto the bill. The times I used another vet it was only because I couldn't get in soon enough and I was sorry. I've always been happy with the way I was treated there. From now on I stick with them.
Three Notch is good, my kid worked there in high school, I'm sure the vets have changed since then but Drs. Maddox and Ironmonger were the favorites.
I've heard great things about All Kinds in Callaway. Lots of positive feedback from my clients.
For routine shots, heartworm and flea meds, I suggest you try the Well Pet Clinic in Lexington Park. They have kind of funny hours but are wonderful people, I adopted my last three dogs have come from them.

I was vet shopping when I moved here 6 years ago. I took the records for both of my Labs to Breton and Tidewater. Breton wanted $200 more for the same checkups, shots, heartworm meds and front line. Ended up at tidewater. It isn't as fancy but I've been very satisfied. The don't gouge you and didn't even charge me for a few things.

Three Notch in Hollywood. They provided great care for our dog for and took great care of him (and me) when it was time to have him put to sleep.

We were not happy with VCA at all

Our one vet in TX wouldn't write a script for us for medication that we knew we could get at regular pharmacy for much cheaper. It's a growing trend

Might be a little farther for you but Prince Frederick Animal Hospital is great!

If not, I would also recommend All Kinds.

Good luck!

Three Notch Vet...Dr. Pilkerton is the best! Very patient and compassionate with animals.....also very good with the cost of things. She is the only one who has treated my last 4 dogs....unless we needed a specialist

Dr. Ironmonger at Three Notch is excellent, my boy isn't the friendliest pup in the world and is often looked at with suspicion because of his size but her calm demeanor always puts him at ease!

So NurseSherri, I guess you have gotten several opinions and the better choice would be either Three Notch or All Kinds. :buddies:

I would rather be run over with a Bull dozier than to ever have any pet of mine see Dr. Lynn Fenwick. I have never met such a rude and insensitive vet and especially one who is as ignorant that she was in 1997.

Long story short, I found a stray cat at the Hollywood Fire Dept. summer carnival in 1997. He limped over to my car so I picked him up and took him home. I desperately hoped he would bounce back with a warm home, food, a bath and some TLC. Sadly a week later he was still limping. Not having a lot of money at the time I called St. Mary's Vet. (Dr. Forrest's practice?) at this time Dr. Fenwick was also practicing there albeit much earlier on her career.

They said they would make payment arrangements with me, which is basically unheard of today. They were going to x-ray kitty and if he needed surgery they would put him under and also neuter him at the same time. But Dr. Fenwick had other plans. She put "Lucky" under and neutered him. Then x-rayed him and then called me and told me his hip was broken a needed a pin. They then turned immediately around, put a 20 week old kitten back under and pinned his hip. " Lucky " lost all nine of his lives that day as he died from cardiac arrest over the strain of too much anesthesia in such a short period of time. Needless to say my bill ended up being zero, "lucky" was sent back to me in a shoebox and Dr. Forrest gave me the number of another lady across from the quick shop in LT who had kittens for free.

MY oldest was 7 at the time so on one side the dead kitten was in a box in the trunk and her new kitten was hiding under the seat of my car. I learned a big lesson that day. "Do not replace one animal before the other one has been honored and grieved". The lady the new kitten came from actually paid me to 10 bucks to take him and even though he has since passed on "Sammy" was the best cat I ever had.

I would never take another pet to that woman though. Her ignorance killed and animal that had no need to die.
