California Burning

But the California Speedway can seat more than 120,000 people. Surely, it'll hold (between the infield and stuff) 200,000 people or more? I mean, they're already using outdoor shelters as it is.

Good lord, I couldn't imagine evacuating to a speedway or stadium. If I were in that situation I'd take the opportunity for a road trip. Just hop in the car and drive to someplace that wasn't on fire. :yay:

And yes, I realize that is not an option for everyone, but that is what I would do.

Lost a home in '93 and living in trailers ever since...

Arson Investigated in California Fires

California authorities and FBI agents searched a home Wednesday as part of an arson investigation into one of the wildfires devastating Southern California, a law enforcement official said.

The search was conducted in Orange County by the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the FBI, the official said. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing, would not say what was taken.

"FBI Los Angeles is assisting Orange County fire officials and sheriff's office in an ongoing investigation into the source of some of the fires," FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said. He referred all other questions to local authorities.

That cant be.... Anderson cooper told me Global warming started the fire

I heard a report earlier stating a helicopter spotted a dude get off a motorcycle and torch a hillside that was not yet burning. He got back on and hightailed it out of there. The copter folks called it in and followed him and he was caught. I heard that report earlier this morning and can only assume he's the one they are reporting about this evening. I wonder how many were in on it... sonsabiatches.

FBI now says no home was searched.

This is definitely a good case for a lingering, painful death penalty.

If that's true, they should tie him up in a stadium and have a panel of Californians choose what order his body parts get cut off and/or burned off.

My Way News - Feds Join Probe in SoCal Wildfire

In San Bernardino County, a man suspected of starting a small fire was arrested and another man was shot to death by police after he fled officers who approached to see if he might be trying to set a fire.

Wildfires, burning in seven counties, had destroyed about 1,500 homes and caused more than a half-million people to flee since the first blaze began late Saturday. At least two - in Orange and Riverside counties - have been linked to arson.

Investigators taped off an area they called a crime scene, took photos, collected evidence and recorded map coordinates, according to ATF Special Agent Susan Raichel. Authorities believe the fire had been set because they found three different ignition points within a short distance - a common sign of arson.

In San Bernardino County, a motorcyclist who authorities say set a small fire in a rural foothill area of the San Bernardino Mountains has been booked for investigation of arson. Authorities said they didn't know if the man was connected to any of the 16 major wildfires burning in Southern California.

Two bodies found in San Diego County home - CNN.com
:bawl: I have a lot of family and friends in Poway :bawl:

SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- Fire crews found two bodies Thursday inside a home in Poway, California, one of the San Diego communities hit hardest by this week's fierce wildfires, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.

Firefighter Kenny Lundgren works his way up a hill looking for hot spots Wednesday in Running Springs, California.
If the deaths are confirmed to be from the Witch fire, the largest to hit Southern California this week, they would be the third in the 23 fires that have charred more than 460,00 acres. More than 1,400 homes have been destroyed.

One person was killed in the Harris fire in southern San Diego County earlier this week. Five others, all senior citizens, died during or after evacuations, and 78 people, including at least 36 firefighters, have been injured.

Winds that fanned the wildfires calmed to single-digit speeds Thursday, while the lifting of evacuation orders allowed thousands of Californians to return to check on their homes.

At one point, almost 1 million people were under evacuation orders as fires burned from the Mexican border to northern Los Angeles County.

Overnight Wednesday, officials permitted residents of 13 communities to return home after San Diego County and the city of San Diego announced evacuation orders had been lifted. Yet about 76,000 people were forced to stay in 42 shelters Wednesday night, county emergency spokeswoman Lynda Pfieffer said.

At the largest shelter, Qualcomm Stadium, most of the 11,000 evacuees there earlier this week had left. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said only 2,500 were left Thursday, and police said only 300 people had spent the night there.

Evacuee Mark Davis was able to return to the site of his Rancho Bernardo home Wednesday, finding the two-story structure burned to the ground.

"It was us. We had been there 28 years, and it had a lot of our flavor," Davis said

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was to tour fire-damaged areas with President Bush on Thursday.

Before leaving Washington on Thursday morning for the flight to California, Bush said the federal government will be providing resources for recovery.

"There will be help for the people of California," said Bush, who earlier signed an order designating seven Southern California counties a major disaster area, a move that will speed federal dollars to victims.

The cost of homes destroyed by the wildfires is likely to top $1 billion in San Diego County alone, an emergency official said.

The wildfires are the largest natural disaster in the United States since Hurricane Katrina, and Federal Emergency Management Agency Director David Paulison promised "a different type of response than the federal government put together" for the 2005 storm.

People left homeless by the fires can go online to apply for federal help at FEMA.gov, he said.

Almost 8,900 firefighters have been battling the blazes.

"It hurts us to have those homes lost. It hurts us to have those injuries. And it is frustrating for us to watch our community be devastated by this," firefighter Andy Menshek said.

Thursday morning, officials reported some degree of containment on all but one of the 23 fires reported in the seven-county area since the weekend. The Slide Fire in the San Bernardino Mountains still burned out of control.

The largest of the fires, San Diego County's Witch Fire, at almost 200,000 acres, was 20 percent contained, fire officials said.

The National Weather Service forecast light winds across Southern California on Thursday, relieving the pressure on firefighters.

As winds calmed, firefighting aircraft grounded for most of the week -- by the winds that gusted to hurricane strength -- could finally fly.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Capt. Scott McLean called the droning noise of aircraft the "sound of joy."

"Their drops are hitting their mark because the wind is not there," he said.

Still, the fire damage increased to 462,415 acres (723 square miles), officials said.

One large fire was a suspected arson.

The FBI and the Orange County Fire Authority are investigating the Santiago Fire that has burned 23,000 acres.

"We found multiple points of origin and that leads to us suspect arson, and our investigators confirmed this is in fact arson," said Kris Concepcion, the battalion chief for the Santiago Fire.

"Whoever has started this has started it in different points that indicate that they wanted to grow rapidly," Concepcion said on CNN's "American Morning." Watch the raging flames of the Santiago Fire »

The smaller Rosa Fire in Riverside County was also probably arson, state officials said.

Helicopters were back over the Lake Arrowhead area after all air activity had been suspended because of extremely smoky skies.

In nearby Running Springs, CNN's Ted Rowlands stood amid charred, smoldering rubble.
"It will be a while before these people will come back. When they do come back, unfortunately they'll have this pretty much to look at," Rowlands said Wednesday. Watch Rowlands describe a major battle with the flames »

About 500 homes were lost in the mountainous region in San Bernardino County east of Los Angeles.

They have already arrested one person, shot and killed another over these fires and have released neither persons name.

Do I think it could be an attack, damn skippy. The Japs tried it in WWII and we know AQ has been looking at this type of attack.

I can just imagine:

"Habib, you control the winds. Achmed, you lower the humidity. Abdul, you raise the temperature. And you, Mohammed, your job is most important: you must prevent rain for three months prior to the attack."

Yep, I can see your point.
