i know this place is a big sponsor for SOMD.COM, but a friend of mine went to their kennels last week to check out a puppy, and she said the conditions are TERRIBLE there. has anyone else noticed this?

I have a hard time believing that someone that stupid is capable of making enough money to be that stupid.

I personally know a few fools that have paid over $1k for a mutt. I have several friends that have paid $500 on average for Yorkipoos.
My mutt was free.

the only time I will EVER pay for a dog again is when i go to purchase new WORKING dogs. and that will be a while!
I know I will look to pay 1800-2000 for what I want. But I want a dog that has drive breed into them and they also have a working line.
I did just luck out on a rescue that will turn into my next working dog...she will be great but the main thing she lacks is play drive.... she has food drive but that would never cut it for some people.
..... look at tri county people..you can save 1300

Not cute enough to fork out that kind of money on. There are plenty of cute puppies that need rescued right now.

USUALLY GOOD BREEDERS.... stick to one type of dogs.... and DEVOTE their time as a breeder to better the breed...
not pump out puppies like a salad shooter.... and when you start to plan your litters around the holidays.... well I will now list you as a backyard breeder/puppy mill

If the puppies are half of two different breeds, than how can they be "SHOW QUALITY AKC, PURE BRED". That should be your first clue that this is a puppy mill and no one should be supporting their disgusting abuse and overbreeding of animals. Just my humble opinion.

This cracks me up...I think the "proper" term is "Designer Dogs". Well, I didnt know it at the time, but 18 years ago when I adopted my girl from the animal shelter, when she was 8 weeks old, I guess I had a designer dog. She was designed by 57 different designers, you know, an original Heinz 57 design. LOL. Dayum...I hads me a purebred mutt!!!

If they truly have AKC papers, they are not "mutts". What it sounds like is one parent of the pups is an American breed retriever and the other parent is English. This is very common in the retriever breeds.

think the thing was is the breeding was a lab and a golden retriever.
not an american lab and an english lab.
Breeding two AKC dogs of different breeds does not give you an AKC puppy. It gives you a mutt or a 'designer' breed. These puppy mills advertise that they have bred two AKC quality dogs so that they can charge some ridiculous price that some stupid person will pay because they see the words AKC, Designer Breed, Champion Blood Line, blah blah blah.
Yes, they are designer mutts, but it's not about "cute puppies". All puppies are cute, even chihuahuas. What you're paying for is the cross-breeding for certain traits.
Apollo is a designer mutt - Schnoodle: half poodle, half schnauzer. He is exactly what I wanted in a dog. The good news is that he fell into my lap, but I did check out the pups at Callaway Kennels when I was half-heartedly searching. Neither the pups nor the facility was dirty.
Of course I can't find it now, but I read a great article on designer mutts and how they're actually better dogs than pure breeds. Think about it: a pure breed is almost certainly inbred throughout the years, and they are more prone to defects and genetic problems. A mixed dog does not have those issues, and with a breeder you know exactly what the mix is instead of what the shelter is guessing at.
Not necessarily standing up for CK, but there are definite advantages of a mixed breed over a pure breed.
