Will all autos some day have breathalyzers? - USATODAY.com

Widespread use of ignition interlock devices that won't allow a car to be started if a driver has had too much alcohol, once considered radical, no longer seems out of the question. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) gives a qualified endorsement to the idea. New York state legislators are considering requiring the devices on all cars and trucks by 2009. And automakers, already close to offering the devices as optional equipment on all Volvo and Saab models in Sweden, are considering whether to bring the technology here.

I'm sure they will
You're to stupid to check your tire pressure, so low pressure sensors are now mandatory.
You're to stupid to fasten your seat belt, so an annoying alarm is mandatory.
You're to stupid to turn on your windshield wipers when it rains, so rain sensing wipers are available.
You're to stupid to turn on you headlights so daytime running lights are available
You're so stupid you've accepted airbags as a mandatory safety device event though they kill people.

All it takes is a few well placed campaign contributions by a breathalyzer manufacturer and they will be mandated for new cars.

Can you imagine everyone on the beltway pulling over to blow in a tube or whatever these contraptions have?

I pictured people not even pulling over :lmao:

Like, an alarm goes off and says "please blow into tube within 15 seconds or your engine will shut off" and then it counts down. No time to stop in traffic so the driver has to lean down to the tube and blow while driving :roflmao:

you do not have to pull over to effectively give a sample. You do have to drive with one hand similar to being on a cell phone.

The overall technology is not yet that dependable, for long term use, as in the life of an automobile.

I've never seen the interlock systems  I assumed they were on the dash or somewhere in that area.

its a tube you breath into. what part is so hard, you breath when you drive anyway, and its no more difficult than changing a CD or answering the phone.

(one of the guys in my building had one in both of his vehicles)
