Sunny is 6mths now and just under 20lbs. She's outgrowing the carrier/carseat thing her mother had fast. We recently bought a car seat for her for our use. It will be good until she no longer needs it. It will continue to face the rear for several more months too.

Had a conversation with a friend this past weekend over booster seats. Seems the said friend was pulled over for a traffic violation and was instructed that the booster seats she had were not allowed by Maryland state law. The cop tried to tell her that she had to have a booster seat with the attached back.

Seems the cops dont know thier own laws.

There is no law stating what type of booster to use. Only that we have to use them.

I always though it was a law that you had to be at least 20 lbs AND 1 yr old to sit forward facing. I know that many kids outgrow their infants seats prior to 1 yr but then you just buy a convertable seat and face it backwards.

I tried looking online but I couldn't find anything that said it was a "law", but many sites did state the "1 yr AND 20 lb" thing. Both car seats I own also say that.

Does anyone know if this is just recommended b/c its safer or if it is an acutaly law?

My child will probably be 20 lbs by 6 months of age but I would definatly keep her rear facing as long as possible b/c of how much safer it is. I plan to keep her rear facing until about 35 lbs b/c I believe that is the limit of the car seat we have.

35lb.? Geez my daughter would be facing backwards until first grade then. :lol: 2 years 7 months now and still 22lbs. :lmao:

Seriously doubt that! My son is 26 months. 34.5 inches and 32 pounds. He's a pretty big guy. He'd be one lil unhappy dude if I still made him face the rear. :shrug:

It's not that serious
My son is 2.5, 31lbs and 38 inches tall... we just drove cross country with him rearfacing in a convertable carseat. He just crosses his legs and does fine. We don't always have it rearfacing but it just fit better that way with our luggage. Rearfacing is always safer though! The rule is 20 lbs AND 1 year... unless your child is a giraffe, they'll fit. :whistle: :shrug:

I think one of the benifits to turning them around once they reach 20lbs is so that they can see what's going on out the windows while you travel. :huggy:

He didn't pitch a fit being rearfacing? Mine would scream all the way cross country! That's just mean for a 2 year old! :lol:

For the car vs. truck airbag carseat placement issue-think about the height of a car vs. a truck...A car could be run over in a heart beat. Full Size Trucks and SUV's are taller and seem safer. As for the roll over...

The Charles Co. P.D. has a safety program for carseats...I was at the dealer getting my car worked on and a huge trailer is sitting in the back parking lot with info about that program. They will also install your carseats.

Finally, you should buy your carseat according to your car. I think the Discovery Health show "Yummy Mummy" aired a segment on the best/safest carseats and how certain carseats are best for certain cars and being able to "try out" the carseat at certain stores for fit and safety before purchasing that seat. If met with resistance, talk to a manager.

I'm an Occupational Therapy Grad Student...

I research everything, all day, all the time. In fact, I am getting ready to go do more research at the library...

Anyway, the carseat knowledge was because I called a cop friend from high school to install a carseat while I was babysitting.

My 5 year old constantly asks for money from people. What would be a good way to stop this? :confused:
