Car vs. SUV

a Volvo S40.

I completely understand the desire for such a car but at your age it's completely impractical. Take it from someone who'd kill to get out of a $500 car payment and the additional insurance to cover a "luxury" car. You're young; get an Accord or Camry now and the luxury car when you're older and more established.

Thanks, BF really likes the Subaru, but I figure if we're going for that, why not buy an SUV at the same price?
Out of the SUV's you listed, the Subaru would be a much better car for the money.. They are all 4WD, drive and handle like a car, and will last FOREVER.. high resale value.. Subaru has a LOT of plusses against the rest of your list.. and if you aren't planning on doing any rock climbing (which none of the SUV's you listed would be good at either) go for the more comfortable, safer Subaru..

Check the safety ratings on all the vehicles you want, then compare/contrast the ones that get the best rating. I was bound and determined to make my next vehicle an Xterra, but after D's parents' accident, I've decided to go for a sedan that has better crash test ratings (a Volvo S40).

:yeahthat: Crashin sucks

I have a Ford Expedition that I enjoy. The only thing that I would change about it is it is the 4.6 and not as quick as I would like it. :) I LOVE to drive the hubby's F-250 with a V-10. Talk about fun! My husband can do most of the work on the expedition, but the only problem we have had is a misfire on the coil and that is with 90,000 miles on it. Whatever you get I would advise you to look on the internet for a forum for that particular vehicle.

For 19 years I was a Subaru owner, loved them, but just switched in May to Toyota wanted a little bigger SUV then the Forester I had. I went to the Toyota Highlander and yes it is on the Camry wheelbase, I picked this over some other models for its gas mileage and it does have a third row seat with seating for 7. Granted you are not going to get 2 full size adults in the 3rd row, but works great for the grandkids, I have had 5 adults and 2 kids in it going to National games, with no complaints. I choose Toyota over a couple of the other models because of there track record and so far I have had no problems not even little minor things that you sometimes go back to the dealer with when you first get a car. I went to Waldorf Toyota, but before I went I had been on the internet and checked online with Carmax (Laurel Toyota) brought up there listings and they seemed to have had the best prices around (no haggle price))found what I wanted printed out the copy and then went to Waldorf and told them dont make me drive to Laurel, showed them the printout and they matched it. If Toyota is what you choose bring up Laurel Toyota check there prices they really appear to be low compared to other dealers, print out a copy and let Waldorf try to match it. Go see the Big Guy, a Mr Washington I had a great buying experience at Waldorf.

:yeahthat: vehicle specific forums can really aid in your decision. And you can be sure that's the first place you'll see the gouge on warranties, recalls, broke crap the dealer won't fix, etc...

Bigger SUV, based on the CAMRY!?? I'm lost, is it an SUV or a CAMRY?? Granted a Camry is a nice CAR, but you can't base a TRUCk off of a nice car!

I'd still say in her position, stick with the Subaru. It's more of a truck then THAT!!

Subaru Legacy 2.5 Sport Wagon :yay: :yay:

250HP STi motor and AWD, only like 75lbs heavier than WRX wagon , cheaper insurance, and hauls more crap

Oh yeah! We bought one in January, and we love it. Only problem is that the wife drives it, and I'm stuck with a VW with 77 fewer horses.

I totally understand what you're saying, and I'm not getting a new car til we move anyways, so I have a lot of time to think about it. The baseline S40 starts at around 24k, which is close to the Mazda6 (my other choice for sedan). It'll all boil down to the test drives and research, and the "luxury" deal will come into play...That being said, I hate Accords and Camrys, but I know what you're driving at.

What are your opinions on Volvo? I always believed they had safety and reliability going for them.

Volvo has built their reputation on safety. I wouldn't question that. Reliability for all vehicles in the first 3-5 years is going to be pretty close to the same, as our domestics have seriously closed that gap.

What I really don't like about the Volvo (I'll use an S40 as an example) is their rapid depreciation, and expensive maintenance and repair costs.

At the end of 5 years your Volvo will retain about 41% of its value. A Camry will hold approx 60%. Based on 15K per year, your cost per mile is about $0.42 for the Camry versus $0.51 for the Volvo. You can drive an SUV for that much money per mile.

Looking at it now. :yay:

I'm realizing how hard it is to find a reasonably priced sedan that have safety ratings worth investing in.
