Here's what it ended up like:
1794821_921185244561520_3306237543460669857_n.jpg - Chicken Soup
10632654_921185161228195_622846651609644686_n.jpg - dumplings after simmering covered for 10 mins. OOPS! I put too waay many dumplings into and they grew together. :jet: That, plus the soup nearly filled the dutch oven already.
10628072_921185317894846_2599972492480579690_n.jpg - after dishing out some of the soup and dumplings.

It was delicious!

Looks yummy! It's getting to be that comfort food time of year. I'll be busting out the soup pot here before too much longer.

When I make chicken and dumplings, I make a traditional chicken soup recipe - whatever you like to make - and then at the last half hour, I bring the soup up to a boil. While that's going on I mix up a batch of Bisquick and then I drop the Bisquick dumplings into the hot soup. The dumplings thicken the soup up a little bit more and then have your chicken and dumplings! :cartwheel

I'm gonna have to make them soon!

My way too, but the dumplings only take about 20 minutes, I think. (10 with lid on 10 with lid off, if I remember correctly) Just make sure you don't have the heat up too high once you put the bisquick dumplings in, or you'll burn whatever's in the bottom of the pan.

YUMMMM!

The first time I ever made chicken and dumplings (using bisquick) for my husband, he gave me the strangest look and asked me what the frig are those things. He grew up with a mother who cooked the pennsylvania dutch flat noodle type dumplings. I had never heard of them. His mother taught me how to make them a few years later, and I do like them, but they don't satisfy my dumpling craving for puffy airy bits of goodness with gravy dripping off them the way the bisquick dumplings do.

Oh, the dumplings only take 20 mins - I just meant that I start the prep for them about half hour before I think we're going to eat. :yay:

Mmmm, I love me some slippery pot pie. When my first husband and I lived in PA our downstairs neighbor was the head cook at this homestyle restaurant in town - the type of place where everyone goes after church and they hold the monthly Rotary meetings. That dude could COOK. Slippery pot pie; biscuits with bacon gravy; pork and kraut; pierogies; corn chowder - man!

I've never made chicken soup or chicken-n-dumplings from scratch but I always thought you put them in last. Would putting them in with the broth overcook them by the end?

This thread made me want to try it again. I rescued a cast iron dutch oven from my father's garage and just spent the past 2 hours de-rusting it. Lots of wire wheel, Brillo and muscle. Just oiled it up with olive oil, needs to be re-seasoned.

Nice! I'd love to have a cast-iron dutch!

Bisquick dumplings?

Nope, dislike Bisquick. My grandma used Pillsbury biscuits (blue can) so that's the kind I like. When cooking I keep dunking them down in the broth till chewy. I dislike fluffy.

Refrigerator canned biscuits? :drama: Oh, the horror!

Horror... come on, not really. Have you tried? Anyway, different strokes as they say. Just like homemade waffles vs frozen....I prefer the frozen. Call me weird if you must....

I quoted Lily but something went wrong. My text got all scrambled in her quote. Happens at times. I've had homemade and Bisquick and granny's blue can biscuits touched me taste buds, that's all.

:huggy: I was teasing!! Some folks think Bisquick is unworthy. I like the fact that it's a baking mix already made up and saves me a smidgeon of time and effort.
