I don't think the paychecks are for that because they barely cover the cost of shoe polish and/or getting the uniforms cleaned.....
Thanks to your son and millions upon millions like him this is a free country.

You and the lunatic in TX are free to go to Iraq (or any other dump over there), hook up with some friendly terrorists and explain to them how against this war you really are. I say go for it.... :patriot: :patriot:

As with any other job, military members start at the bottom of the ladder.
This is true but it burns my ass listening to Latrell Sprewelll whining about his lousy $7 mil a year when an Army E-9 with over 10 years only makes $48K.

I appreciate where you're coming from, but wanted to point out the logic that most people seem to miss.

I'm not against the war, not against Bush, didn't vote for Kerry. I agree that we need to finish the job we started. I'm just extremely sympathetic to the families. Who isn't?

Then I apologize. My assumption was formed from points highlighted in your post below....

If my son died in a car accident and it was his fault, I'd be putting flowers on his grave. If he died in an accident and someone else was at fault, say a drunk driver, I'd probably be sitting in court, making sure the person did their time for killing my son. If it was an innocent mistake, I'd try to forgive the other driver. I'm sure that person would feel horrible the rest of their life for the mistake; however, Bush did not put my son in that car. Bush does not seem to care how many die or be sympathetic to the families. Where are the weapons of mass destruction????

I can see where you could have assumed that. My statement was an emotional statement (open mouth, insert foot). Apology accepted.

That's because people spend millions of dollars to go to NBA games, buy the jerseys, buy the big foam fingers, etc. Without Latrell Sprewell and other athletes, the NBA and other sports leagues wouldn't exist, so the 300 or so NBA players are just getting their share of that rather large pie. If you want them to earn less money, then everyone should stop paying so much for the tickets and merchandise, and encourage Congress to tax us more heavily so that the money we save on the NBA tickets goes to the government and to the soliders for their pay.

I'm not saying soldiers don't deserve more money, in fact they deserve much more money and much more respect and admiration. Just have to convince society in general to rechannel its resources. Good luck. Just can't blame athletes or the government for this.

It's supply, and demand. If we all decide collectively that NBA ticket prices are just --- too --- high ---- and people stay away in droves over it --- they have to lower the prices. But people are, and WILL, pay them.

It works with entertainers too. Out of work entertainers and has-beens can't GIVE it away. It's why people STILL pay mega-bucks for a Rolling Stones ticket, but can't be PAID enough to see a free concert by Air Supply. There's no demand for it.

Don't like the exorbitant fees your lawyer charges? Tell him that, as he laughs into his cellphone. You'll pay it anyway, because you need him more than he needs you. If we all had alternatives to lawyers that were viable - the demand would go down - they'd get cheaper.

The fact is, some people get paid a lot, and some products cost a lot because the commodity is scarce and everyone wants it bad enough. Gas prices keep rising, and there's no current evidence that people are curtailing their use. So they STAY high, even though there's PLENTY of oil.

I know it SEEMS like it casts a huge shadow over a society that pays a man a million dollars to play a game but a pittance to someone who teaches your kid - but you wouldn't pay your kid's teacher a hundred bucks just to watch them teach, and no one else you know would, either.

I AM however looking forward to the time when Hollywood as it exists becomes obsolete because of the glut of new "talent" exceeds the diminishing demand on actually going to the theater rather than waiting for it to come out on video. When blockbusters are driven by effects, and the biggest movies are animated, and people don't bother leaving their homes because some big STAR is going to be on the screen.

Here's the thing: I feel sorry for Bush in all this because he's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. You get all these libbies crying tears over the woes of the world - we must DO something! - but they cry even worse when a (Republican) President DOES do something.

Note I added the (Republican) because none of these whiners - not the liberals, not the routine Democrats, not the mainstream media, not the usual cast of characters, NOBODY - said a word when Clinton sent troops into Kosovo and Somalia. And those guys were absolutely NO threat to us whatsoever. Had nothing to do with us.

What they DID say was how horrible it was to criticize the President when "our troops are in harm's way". I notice, however, that they don't feel that way now.

This Sheehan woman is just looking to get her mug on TV - that's it. And I find it beyond reprehensible that she would use the death of her son to achieve that goal. I hate to be so cynical but anti-war irrationality and hypocrisy has made me that way.
