They got an alcohol violation, and when they went in front of the liquor board they found out that they did not have a valid county resident on the license, so it was pulled. They were a chain store and the old license was grandfathered in. So now they can not get a new licensee because St. Mary's county prohibits "chains" from getting off sale licensees. Without selling beer they could not make it so they are closing.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I've known that for a while. Does any other county have that type of law? I assumed the law was a decades-old sweetheart deal for politically powerful local mechants. (McKay's has the lottery, cigarettes and liquor sold at the same separate register. Throw in some skin mags and you would have a "One-Stop Vice.")

So the law doesn't apply to sales for on-site consumption? That would have effectively stopped the Applebee's and Ruby Tuesday's chains from moving here.
