DeGeneres in doghouse

Actually, many rescue organizations are hurting themselves.
As Bann stated so eloquently "inflated opinions of their own importance and missions". They're pushing people away.

:yeahthat: I wanted to "adopt" when we were looking for our first schnauzer. After dealing with two different rescue groups, I ended up purchasing a pup. Two years later we wanted a 2nd schnauzer and I still wanted to "rescue" so I waited and watched, waited and watched until I finally found an add on SOMD.COM for private adoption.

Is the purpose of a rescue to save animals from abuse and neglect, or to save them from contract breakers?

These tards have hurt the reputation of all rescuers with their idiocy.

I agree that most adoption agencies go a little overboard trying to find the "perfect" house. There's no such thing. What's better, to adopt 20 dogs to really good homes, or to wait and wait searching for 1 perfect home?

I can definitely see how people get frustrated trying to adopt. I've adopted all but 1 of my animals, but I found adoption groups that weren't so anal. I like animal shelters.....they check for basics, but they don't make you jump through rings of fire. I adopted a cat last year, and they practically begged me to take him home right after I filled out the app.

I have different view of SMAWL. I adopted my dog from them 11 years ago, and they were ok....but now, I would not adopt from them. I called once to inquire about a dog...that's when someone else was running it I think. He left some nasty message on his answering machine about how busy he was and "don't expect a call back right away." Well, the effer NEVER called back. After that, and talking to some of the people at events, I would never adopt from them again.

Update 1

"Ellen DeGeneres' doggy drama intensified Tuesday after her tearful plea on her talk show led to death threats against the rescue group that took back her adopted dog for violating the contract, according to a spokesman for the agency's owners.

DeGeneres explained on her show that the Brussels Griffon terrier mix didn't get along with her cats, so she gave it to her hairstylist's family. The owners of Mutts and Moms claimed that DeGeneres violated the adoption agreement by not informing them that she was giving the dog away and removed Iggy from the hairstylist's home Sunday."

Agreed.

Not all rescues are like this, but enough of them are that I wouldn't want to deal with their silliness. They can keep their animals for all I care - breeders don't give you such a hard time.

You'd be surprised. Many breeders have the same type of contract anymore.

In support of the rescues, they see horror and evil that people put animals throught hat we never here about. Trolling through our classifieds here can be a real eye opener. Right now there are people giving away their 11 year old dog that they have had since it was 8 weeks old, because they don't have time for him anymore. It is so horroble. I hope when they are 77 someone doesn't have time for them.

This chick's rescue is insane, not adopting small dogs to children under 14. But maybe she has seen small dogs used as a kickball one too many times and it breaks her heart.

Locally, Animal Welfare League seems to be just fantastic. They have easy, resonable forms and will gladly take the animal back and find it a new home without making you feel horrible. Sometimes and animal and a household are not a perfect fit.

well, here's my two cents, I've been following this since watcing ET last night and "IggyGate" as they dubbed it tonight. I'm thinking maybe it's like this... Ellen bought the dog for X amount... if she brings the dog back, the agency can then sell it again to someone else for X amount. The agency is then out of X amount of money because they couldn't resell the dog????

Personally, I think this whole thing is crap. I think it should be that once you buy a pet you buy a pet - the agency should have NO say if you find a more suitable home. However, if its not working out and you find no other home for it then, yes bring it back. But if that's what was in the contract, I think its a crappy stipulation... with that kind of stipulation where the agency is constantly in the picture if it doesn't work out - I'd feel more like I was "renting" the pet versus "buying" the pet. Once its YOUR pet and BOUGHT it should by all means be YOUR pet.

What a bunch of jerks.

I agree, they showed the lady tonight on ET making a tearful plea about the threats she's received and how she feels her life is in danger, etc... but they still insist on reselling the dog to someone else.... It's not like they will be sued if it doesn't work out with the hair dresser's kids and cute Iggy decides to get a mean streak... but yet she cried all over the place and had her "attorney" talking for her at points of the show as she is now under undue duresss or whatever  I still think - once you buy a pet it's yours no matter what.

When I got my beloved Sage (missing since April 5, 2003) the breeder's (now famous DiMaria's or something or other) told me she was the Granddaughter of Grand National Cat... I would not be able to get the papers for her until I prooved she had been fixed and would not breed. All I got was her lineage of father and mother. I said "screw you and your papers - it's my cat" which meant without papers. Big deal all it meant was I could not enter her into cat shows, etc... I didn't care, I had no intentions on that, although she was a bit on the snooty side, she was the love of my life and wanted at least ONE litter, she had one litter and then a year later (7-8 years later) disappeared. Again something I feel a breeder or rescue should not have rights to... once you buy the animal and pay monetary value for it - they should NO LONGER have any say in it. They released it to you... they should be able to abide by THEIR decision.

I wonder how they knew Ellen had given the dog away. And even knew where this hairdresser lived so they could go kidnap the dog.

Did they give Ellen her money back? And then why can't the hairdresser just buy the dog for herself? Curious what kind of emotional problems this dog will have, being removed from a loving home like that.

They called Ellen's house to see how Iggy was fitting in. Ellen told them she had given the dog to the hairdresser ( and may have told them where Iggy now lived upon questioning ). The Free Iggy petition line is good for a laugh or twelve.

Good god :roflmao:

You'd think with all this bad publicity, those rescue people would give the dog back to the hairdresser and apologize for any misunderstanding. I'll be curious how this hurts their adoption efforts, with people now knowing that when you get a dog from these folks that it's not really *your* dog.

Wow, I know a lot of people in the US and here are animal freaks but this entire thing is beyond stupid. Why would this even make the news? It’s JUST A FREAKIN’ DOG. Like all animals it is essentially property, who the hell cares? It wasn’t poisoned, beaten, eaten, or sexually molested. BFD, stories like this make me want to slap news people, don’t they have anything interesting to cover? Ellen’s ex-dog, unless she fried it up and ate it, should not be a blip on the national news scene.

The hairdresser's family only had the dog for 2 weeks. I'm sure they bonded, but I don't really think they should be THAT distraught over it. It's not like they had him for a year.

I do think the adoption group should have made an exception for this one family, since the dog was already with them. I doubt their organization will be around much longer.

Does anyone else think it's weird their name is "Moms and Mutts" and they're being weird about a family with kids (even if they are under 14) adopting a small dog? You'd think if they're going to be adopting to Moms then they wouldn't mind kids.
