DeSantis and Florida

They write:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued an emergency declaration ahead of Hurricane Milton that prohibits Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie from exercising his authority to suspend or limit gun sales.
The preemption of Guthrie’s authority is unprecedented and even highlighted in the news release that went out with the executive order declaring an emergency:
“For your reporting purposes, please note in particular the following: Language in the opening portion of Section 2, which prohibits the suspension of or limitation of the sale, dispensation, or transportation of firearms.”
No such language was provided in the disaster declarations for hurricanes earlier this year, Idalia last year or Ian the year before.
The order comes shortly after the City of Okeechobee had issued an ordinance in advance of Helene banning citizens from carrying guns and limiting the sale of guns and ammunition, causing an immediate outcry from DeSantis and gun rights advocates.

Our rights are not subject to suspension in the event of an emergency. If we learned anything from COVID, let it be that lesson.

I can't think why they *would* ban gun/ammo sales during a hurricane, except that they're a bunch of fascists who'll use any excuse.

It's so they can block people from returning to their homes without fear of retribution. It's so govt officials can tell private citizens they can't take their helicopter to rescue people without fear of retribution. It's so the govt can control us in general without fear of retribution. There's a lot of bubbling under the surface, a tinder box ready to ignite among we the people and the govt knows it.

Fixed it a touch. My Governor is terrific. I wish he could stay forever. But your Governor would absolutely and without hesitation do anything he could to subjugate and enslave the people of Maryland.

Ron DeSantis Is Blowing Off Calls From Kamala — and for Good Reason

According to a source close to the situation, DeSantis has been avoiding the Democratic presidential nominee’s outreach because her calls “seemed political,” and the governor is focused on recovery, not campaigning.

“Kamala was trying to reach out, and we didn’t answer,” a DeSantis aide told NBC News, emphasizing that DeSantis is committed to keeping the focus on helping Floridians, not engaging in political posturing.

Instead, he's been communicating directly with Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) Director Deanne Criswell.

DeSantis likely recognizes what Harris is attempting to do by reaching out in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. He’s no stranger to the political game, and it’s clear that Harris is seeking a moment similar to the one Barack Obama shared with then-New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. That bipartisan display of unity between Obama and Christie was a pivotal moment, offering Obama a chance to look presidential in the heat of a national crisis — and it bolstered his re-election bid. Kamala recently posted a blatantly staged video of a call between her and the Democrat mayor of Asheville, N.C.

I guess we're supposed to believe it was a coincidence there happened to be video cameras on both for that moment so they could be spliced together. DeSantis, however, isn’t about to be a pawn in Kamala's campaign strategy. He won't be her Chris Christie. He knows that Kamala, the Democratic presidential nominee, is likely hoping for a similar photo-op or moment of solidarity that could help boost her image during a tight race.

By declining her calls, he’s avoiding a situation that could shift the narrative and instead is keeping the focus on Floridians and their recovery — not on giving Harris a platform to score political points.

But this contradicts another post that says he had no idea she was trying to contact him.

🌪️🌪️ NBC News ran a snarky story yesterday headlined, “Ron DeSantis is refusing to take Harris' call on Hurricane Helene.Ain’t nobody got time for that. DeSantis responded to querulous reporters saying, after six years as Florida’s Governor, the Vice-President has never called him about a hurricane before. Only now, when the Cackler is fighting a losing political campaign:

Seriously, people. America’s Governor shouldn’t be wasting time helping Kamala chortle up some Twitter soundbites.

🌪️ Yesterday, the Washington Examiner ran a story offering much relief to Floridians headlined, “DeSantis says FEMA not leading hurricane relief.” Thank Heavens.

image 19.png

CLIP: DeSantis says FEMA can’t stop people from returning to their homes in Florida (1:37).

Later yesterday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was asked in a Fox interview about FEMA conspiracy theories. Here’s how he answered:

“Now, people have asked me: ‘Is FEMA going to do this?’ Let me be clear in Florida. We run the show. FEMA is not running the show. We will utilize them to support some of the things we’re doing, but you are not going to see FEMA running amok in Florida. I know that’s been out there on the internet. That is not going to happen. I’m the sheriff that’s in charge here. And we will make sure to protect you. Don’t worry about it.”

In trying to find the best headline to succinctly capture Florida’s post-hurricane status following the much-hyped Hurricane Milton, I decided on this one. Forbes, yesterday:

So there you go. This is not meant to minimize the suffering of some people who were injured or whose property was damaged during the storm, especially by the pre-storm tornadoes. Such as an unfortunate fisherman swept off his boat and out to sea, later rescued by the Coast Guard. But it appears that, for the most part, well-prepared Florida weathered the storm like a boss.

Fleeing Florida!

By Jeffrey Folks

For a host of reasons, it became convenient for progressives to suggest that large numbers were fleeing Florida in search of a better life.

When Florida governor Ron DeSantis was a GOP presidential frontrunner, liberal Democrats dug up every scrap of information suggesting he was an ineffective governor, noting that thousands were fleeing his state as a result of his supposedly poor governance. When Trump became the GOP nominee, the attack on Trump’s adopted home state continued. Hundreds if not thousands of articles were generated implying that Trump’s adopted home state was such a disaster that there was a mass exodus. The reality is just the opposite.

To begin, the idea that Florida is losing residents is simply not true. Of course, some residents are always leaving, and others are migrating into the state, but the net result is that Florida gained 2.7 million residents (14.7%) from 2010 to 2020 — more in numeric terms than any other state except Texas. From 2019 to 2024, it is estimated that Florida’s population grew by 1.5% annually, or 7.5% altogether, and there is no indication that its population will stop growing.

Florida is well run by its respected governor. It does not impose personal income taxes (or taxes on pharmaceutical items); it offers a $50,000 homestead exemption for homeowners residing in their homes as primary residences; it has spectacular weather from October to May (and livable conditions from June through September); it is an increasingly conservative state, where personal freedom is respected; and it is very safe outside some areas within its larger cities.

If there is a mass exodus taking place, it is from California, New York, and Illinois. These states have become less attractive because of the high cost of living, crime, high taxes, regulation, and government intrusion into the lives of their citizens. The numbers do not lie: since 2020, California has lost population (200,000 from 2020 to 2022), New York has lost 1.4 million over the past decade (more than any other state), and Illinois lost 853,000 residents from 2010 to 2019 and continues to lose them.

American state gives hundreds of thousands of workers extra days off for the holidays

The state of Florida has given more than 100,000 workers extra days off for the holidays.

Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Wednesday that all state workers will get an additional three days off this holiday season.

'In addition to Christmas Day and New Years Day, our state workers will get three extra days off - December 23, 24 and 31 to spend more time with their families and loved ones this holiday season,' Desantis wrote on X.

The governor said he decided to give the early gift to Floridians because the state 'is in great shape,' and he wants 'to reward our state employees.'

'After a full year, including three costly hurricanes, we hope these extra days off allow for state workers to spend more time with their families and loved ones during this holiday season,' he continued, referring to hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton that tore through The Sunshine State.
State employees were previously given off the day before Thanksgiving last month, Dan Borrow of the Florida Department of Management Services told Fox News Digital.

According to the department's website, Florida offers nine 'observed as paid holidays by state agencies' in 2024.

Those days include New Year's Day, the Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, the Friday after Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
