Do you believe the hype about the dire situation the earth is in?

About the Earth needing our help environmentally?

If not, what proof would you need to change your mind?

For me it would take something that will convince me how a planet that has been here for 5 billion years, has suffered countless meteor strikes, has seen billions of solar flares, has survived through ice ages, magnetic pole shifts, has changed its face continuously through plate techtonics, and has sat in relative proximity to a yellow-orange main sequence dwarf star for the past 5 billion years, and yet is so delicate that it will succumb to its own product within a single century's time.

Aren't the polar ice caps melting the crap out of themselves

That's what They say.

But they also tell us that the ice caps on Mars are melting.

If both are true, then I have to conclude that humanity:

1) Is not the cause of the it.
2) Is not capable of stopping it.

Did you watch Al Gore's movie? I saw Oprah's version. It got me to step up my recycling, etc.

The ecosystem seems delicate to me. Aren't we all dead in four years if we lose the bees?

Yes, the earth is in a warming trend.
Will a fractional reduction in the amount of Co2 generated by humans slow this?
We currently add slightly more than 3% of the total added to the air in a year. If we cut human generated emissions in half (50%) it wouldn't make much difference. Most initiatives propose a 1-5% reduction in human emissions. A 5% reduction at great expense to you and I would net a 0.15% reduction in the world total.

Are polar bears dying due to global warming?
Seems doubtful since there are twice as many as there were in the 60's.

Does the earth cool and warm in cycles?
Since there have been several Ice Ages in the past, it would appear so.

Is "Global Warming" being used as a means to raise taxes and promote social engineering by the folks that are so much smarter and know what's better for us?
Gotta say yes.

If it wasn't "hype" I might believe it a little more.

As far as "helping" goes, I'm all for it. As long as that means identify the problem, formulate a solution, and ensure the solution isn't worse than the original problem.

For example, this massive shift to ethanol is likely to cause so much pollution that we'll kill our rivers and bays. Not much of a solution, is it?

Or petroleum conservation keeping prices low, which means the hollywood elite can still afford to jet around in ther private planes telling the rest of us how we should be conserving.

Another great one is people who freak about how terrible nuclear power is. We wouldn't be in this mess today if the "environmentalists" of the 60's and 70's hadn't forced us away from the one pollutionless energy source we have.

How about having Mars and... Jupiter (i believe), where mankinds SUV's have yet to tread, NOT suffer some of the same effects of "Global Warming" that us earthlings are noticing here.

Is there any other proof that things are going down hill here?

its an open ended and ambigous question.

If the premise is that Mankind is causing (in some way) Global Warming - how do you explain Mars and Jupiter also suffering from it.

If the premise is that the Earth is going through a natural warming period - you'd have to have a belief that Mankind could do anything to stop it. Since my belief is its a natural cycle, since other planets also have it occuring, its most likely caused by the Sun (or some other cosmic factor) as such there isnt anything mankind can do that, other than building some kind of Ginourmous Window Tint.

But thats not to say conservation is a bad thing, but Political Conservation (what Gore is espousing) has no effect/affect other than to hinder capitalism and is just another pyramid scheme to generate more taxes.

I am really curious as to what regular people think. I have seen the Oprah show and I am looking for other opinions. I like to recycle, it feels good. I like to use less chemicals in my house, it feels healthier. It seems like every other person around here is being treated for cancer, so that seems like t is increasing. But I also believe the Earth goes through huge cycles and human kind is just a pimple on the Eath's ass, we don't effect it. But isn't it delicate too? Like someone sneezes in Japan and we have a tornado?

See, I am confuzzalated.

As much as you break wind, you are probably responsible for the majority of the ozone depletion.
