Do you walk your dog or just put them out?

I did both. We have a 7' privacy fence in the backyard. When my old girl was alive, I would let her out in the backyard most of the time and take her for a walk once or twice a week, she was so old, we had to cut her walks back. Now when she was younger, we lived in a more secluded spot and had ponds on the property, she would get a daily walk without the leash around the ponds. She used to love chasing the ducks, geese and occasional groundhound and of course she in turn would be chased by said animals. LOL
My granddog gets let out in the backyard in the morning and gets a walk every evening, dependent upon the weather. (heat, snow, etc.) Honestly, if the weather is too extreme, he doesnt want to be out in it either.

they're dogs, not kids..

We rarely are outside with our dogs, unless they go out with us when we are working on the yard or the cars.. etc.

The smallest dog usually stays outside all day, that's where he wants to be and I'm not going to fight with him over being in the house.

The large dog likes to wander so we put her in the house when we're out during the day, but we let her out to play with the other members of the local doggie gang during the day when we are home. She also tends to chase the animals from the garden and that would be difficult for her to do on a leash..

Both and the weather factors in the decision. The animal gets a walk or 2 a day maybe with a trip to the park to fetch. Sometimes I play fetch in the yard, but it is smaller. In between walks or due to the weather, I let her out in the fenced in yard. (But to be honest we never close the gate, but she doesn't leave the yard.) I never leave her outside if I'm not there because I am scared someone will steal her.

Yup. Speedo kindly offered to do it, but I think I can handle it. Then I have to repaint it all, too.

Sounds like a good end of summer project...or if your me, next spring.

I saw a deck with an espresso stain on HGTV the other day. Nice.

I never leashed the Rotti unless we were out for a walk. But in the yard, at my house or my dads, he wasn't on a leash.

I did the deck in the spring before opening the pool. What a difference!

When I put my dog in the yard, even though there is a 6' privacy fence, I have to watch her constantly, she tries to dig under the fence and being a puppy she wants to eat anything she can find. I had to shoo her away from a fire ant hill this morning. I was also told that we have rattle snakes in the area. I think even when she's mature, I'll have to watch her all the time.

There is a couple down the street that have two pits, they open the front door and just let them go. My husband and I were on our walk a few months ago and one started toward us really slow, we both carry sticks so between the two of us if that dog had attacked us we would have both beat it senseless. The owner came out and called it, took a while for it to listen, but the dog finally went in. Of course my husband "explained" to the woman that you don't let your dogs just run free, especially if they act aggressive.

Bottom line, there are so many things outside that can hurt a pet whether is a neighbor with some kind of chemical on their grass that can poison a dog or other animals. Better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry that I got off the topic of decks and cats.

have you checked into snake proofing her? I have heard a few places will offer this up... they secure the snake so it cant bite... the let the dog get near it..and not sure what they do... but the dog learns to ignore the snakes.

now thats not to say you run across a cottonmouth..and she checks that out.

We do both, but for different purposes. The backyard is fenced in, so he goes potty out there and when it's warm and sunny he likes to go lay in the sun. We also take him for a 30 minute walk every evening (sometimes if it's too hot or raining we'll skip it) but that's just for bonding/routine - it's not a mission to use the bathroom. Although he does manage to pee on all his favorite trees. We don't let him out without a leash in our neighborhood because it's quite busy and we don't want him running in front of a car. As he's gotten older he's much better about staying right with us but we don't want to take that chance. At my mom's house we let him out without a leash (sometimes we're out there with him but most of the time we aren't) and he's fine. He likes to sniff around and poop in the woods and doesn't run off.
