I had a chow for almost 15 years. I got him as a pure bred pup in 1991 and had to but him down last year due to bone cancer. He was my best friend, saved me from 2 robbery attempts, and went everywhere with me when he was younger.

I groomed him myself for his first 3-4 years (since I was a hair dresser at the time) never had a problem. I had a little pocket change one day and thought, let's see what a professional groomer could do with him. I called and made an appt, gave his age, breed, temperment to the place that was the pet shop in San Souci at the time (it's long gone now) . Dropped him off at 8 am or so and got a call back about 5 asking if he was epiletic and he was having siezures. (I tried calling through out the day to find out how he was doing) couldn't get an answer.

I rushed over and he was beside himself, couldn't breathe, freaked out, scared as hell. Yet GROOMED. I paid my fee and off we went to the vet. He calmed in the car so I brought him home. I don't know what they did to him, but in all his years after that, I could never turn on clippers or get scissors near him again. Even when the Vet gave me pills to "calm" him, the minute I turned on the clippers he was alert. The vet also had to start muzzling him after that for everything including shots. I could still bathe and brush him but forget anything else.

OK so there's my Saxon's story... sorry if I bored anyone...

Dontcha hate when peeps ruin your pet. :banghead:

I can't clip my dogs nail cause of her bad experience at a vet's office. A VET'S OFFICE for heaven's sake.

I have 6 dogs, what ever happened to taking care of your own dogs-grooming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, etc..have we become such a lazy, spoiled society we get others to do for our pets what we should be doing ourselves? Isn't that part of owning a pet-being a responsible pet owner. I trust my vet; I would never trust a groomer or dog sitter....there I'm done.

I understand her business was in trouble from jump as she is a lousy groomer with a lousy attitude. I went there one day for information about getting a dog groomed and she was sitting outside talking on phone smoking and couldn't be bothered to get off the phone and come inside to talk to me. I have a frind that took a shihtzu there and he had to be regoomed by a professional a few days later. It is a great location for a groomer but she will not last. Understandably she is distraught and regardless of whole fault it is, poeple will not forget the implication that she had something to do with Chow's death.

I don't know any groomers who got into this business because they could make lots of money or the work is easy. Most of us don't make lots of money and the work is very hard. Out of all the people who have come to me and wanted to learn grooming because they thought it would be "fun" to "play" with dogs all day, only one actually became a groomer. The rest found out how hard it is and quit. That being said I am blessed to have a job that I love.
I'm not condoning or condeming what happened to the dog, but unless you were there you don't know what went on. I feel sorry for everybody involved, the dog, owner, groomer and shop owner. It's a nightmare nobody wants.
Except for emptying the anal sacs, grooming is not uncomfortable for the dog. My regular customers- and most of the not-so-regulars- are good about being groomed, I know their body language, and they have learned what I'm asking of them. As soon as their owners leave the parking area they are just fine.
For those of you who groom your dogs yourself, good for you.

Turns into...

Do you cut your own kids hair?

Have they ever had a babysitter?

Ok I am looking for a good groomer for my dog. I am very picky on how he is cut.. He is a papillon. I am so afraid that someone will mess his hair up.

Papillions don't get cut. Trimmed around the feet and a little under the tail is all.
Sure, Paso, you can come and play with all the wee doggies all day because you know how much fun it is but....shhhh.... don't tell anyone, they'll all want to be groomers....
What kind of wool? Llama? Never can have too much fiber to spin even if I do have a room full...

That is what I thought. That is what I normally do, His butt to keep the dingle berries off and his feet.. But that is it.

you really cant explain to a dog that being groomed/ having their nails clipped is a GOOD thing. it's uncomfortable to them and if they get freaked out theres a good chance its going to be a life long hassle-even if you take them to a good groomer OR a vet's office. it's best to start getting them groomed when they are young to get them exposed to it.

AS FOR THE GROOMER WHO "KILLED THE CHOW"....

the owners of the chow over-sedated the dog before it was groomed. the reason they did this is because the dog was a pain in the ass and previously bit groomers. i know from speaking to the woman who owns the shop that she was very distraught over the situation and that people in the community harrasing her is hurting not only hurting her business but hurting her personally. she truly loves animals and is passionate about what she does.

if i caused my dog to OD i'd probably want someone else to blame too but they should take responsiblity for their own actions. yes i'ts sad the dog died but it was not the groomers fault. i will continue to take my dogs to be groomed there and i have full confidence that they will be in good hands.

The vet decided to clip her nails while she was undergoing another procedure so now she associates it with pain :smack:
