That's what my old vet said - a titer is only good for the day it was done - period. BUT many people are fearful of doing Rabies too often. There is a BIG controversy, as I'm sure you know, over vaccination frequency, especially Rabies.

He is approx. 2 (vet estimate said he was 18 mo. when I got him) and is an American Bulldog Mix. I got him at the shelter last Fall.

 No... the titer is mesuring to see if the body is still "covered" by the shot they were giving... to see if the immune system is working correctly. It doesnt say.. Im working to protect you one day and nope Im not the next. So not sure what your vet was talking about.

as far as rabies... Have not heard that... I have more people do yearly rabies than the three year rabies. They even have a three year distemper shot out now.... Rabies is fatal to both dog and human... why would anyone want to even take a chance on this? :jet: This is why its a law.

OMG ICit is such a meanie :shocking:
sure am :yay:

u can get bit by the cat who has been in a fight with god know what... and whats to eat you. The pit pup who's owner has never given any vacc and it has been in a dog fight... and you cant get the owner to understand .. if this dog bites anyone... and dies... you will only get PART of the dog back.
sorry.. I dont want to die from rabies.. and if I can avoid shots myself.. I will!
Most people I educate about rabies dont even know how its spread.

My old vet said he can NOT exclude my dog from the Rabies vaccination due to a titer showing he's good, because he has no clue when the level may drop. That's what he told me. So basically he was saying he would not issue a Rabies Certificate saying the dog was adequately covered based on a titer.

TRUE about Rabies being deadly .... so someone's fear of Fido getting a tumor from the Rabies vaccination dwarfs in comparison to Fido getting Rabies and biting a human. Is that what you are saying?

ok so go back to my dog's allergies and his age/breed - why did you ask those questions?

ICIT, so Izzy had a tick burrow in before being coaxed out, and she woke up mean and grumpy, is that distemper? rabies or lymes?

We are back.... got there an hour early and the vet said it was a good thing, because she was able to see us.

No Lymes or Ehrlichia. Apparently she has pulled muscle in her back. She is restricted for the next 3-5 days.. no toys, stairs and has to be walked on a leash. She's on pain killers and Doxycyline just in case she did get something from a tick.

So odd though to have a dog that all the sudden cannot walk. She's getting around gingerly now.

Give her lots of snuggles! I hope she feels better soon.

a pulled muscle will do it also... but I would be more cautious when playing... just in case there is something underlying with the spine.

Did they do xray by chance? (to rule out anything with the spacing of the discs/vertebras)

Im all my years.. we see more Fibromas from distemper shots that turn to sarcomas. (its more common in cats and thats why its protocol where to vacc cats and with what vacc)
cant say i have seen it happen with rabies... but its possible

small breeds are sensitive to lepto when young.
the breed you have is a breed that is on the top of the Allergy list for everything... more so on environments .
Im gonna take a stab and guess he has lots of white? (and maybe not a whole lot of pigment on his pads and around eye?) have you had him tested?

The vet didn't seem to think there was a need for it at this time, which would have been to check for a ruptured discs. She had xrays in the past and all her bone structure looked fine. If no improvement in a few days, they will check to see if she ruptured a disc.

Our vet felt confident that she pulled a muscle and said when she got to a certain spot (near her tail bone) she felt her tense up. She was playing ball and tug-a-war with the boys last night so it seems as if this would be the area she tensed up when she pulls on the rope really hard. She always plays like she's indestructible; I guess not this time.

Mostly Black with white-tipped everything except ears ......

No not tested yet - vet said best way to start was to change food to see if helps ..... he also said that this breed tends to have ear issues and I just may find I have to use meds off/on for his life .....

changing food will help if its only a food allergy he has... if its enviroment will you take away the trees and grass.. (oh chit... here we go.... we will have to find a dang tree hugger to come resuce the trees )

my one dog started with allergies at 9 months old... I did the skin test and found he was allerigic to LIFE!!! (including cats).... then did the blood test for food and found he was wayyyyy allergic to lamb and rice (that was what i feed him from day one) He did allergy shots for a year and we know what not to feed.... he is a different dog... but I had an starting point for the food issues!!!

Had him on regular Flint River Ranch (FRR) food, then switched him to the FRR Lamb & Millet. Then to the TOTW Bison, which turned out to also have Venison and chicken meal in it, so I switched him to the TOTW Salmon food. Am watching his ears and see how again he's starting to dig in them, and I see brown goop in there again :cds: . So I have been putting 1/2 vinegar/water solution in his ears every 4 days or so .......

I do NOT want his ears to get all red and inflamed again to the point where he scratches and cries. I doubt it's environmental unless it can be year round and environmental? I tend to think of environmental being seasonally related. This has been a constant problem for the past 7 months.

Environmental does not mean 'the envrionment' as in pollen and nature... it could be something as odd as the material your carpet is made of or the fabric softener you wash his bedding with. So yeah, yep, year round :)

hmmm well he's been in 2 different homes, and we have used various brands of laundry detergent ..... hey maybe he's allergic to ME LOL - yeah I have no clue really what it could be since his home has changed and he stays indoors most of the time. I am honestly hoping it's a simple as a food allergy so I can nail down WHAT he CAN eat and stick to that.

Thanks for your help

its even down to mold.. and yes it is year round
we all have different molds in our house. :faint:
I would say try the test so you have an idea of what to do... how long are you keeping him on the foods?

I was told to try each food for 3 months minimum - I didn't keep him on the TOTW Bison food for more than a couple weeks after I found out it had chicken meal in it - so he's only on week 2 with the new Salmon based food by TOTW. Changing food for this boy is rough - his system is SO sensitive and he gets the runs bad (even if I do a slow mix-in switch).... even when I add probiotics ......

Hello Ark :)

On my dog's environmental test, it said she was allergic to dust mites and that's an all year round thing. Besides that she was allergic to 21 different environmental things. The food switch has helped some, but her paws are severely red again and so is her belly. I think since she's allergic to grass this is what is causing it.
