Soft-crabbing and fishing isn't really our thing. I've taken the boy fishing a couple times. He wasn't really into it. I don't care for it, but I would have kept taking him, had he shown a spark of interest. I seriously doubt the girl will be interested, although I plan on taking her out once just to see. When the other boy is old enough, I'll take him fishing to see how he likes it too.

On the other hand, by the time he gets that old, we may be far away from any body of water.

I built forts and chased my friends through the woods when I was a kid too. My kids run and play with the other neighborhood kids as well. But going out and doing things as a family, there's not much beyond - as the original poster pointed out - shopping or eating.

Where do you live?

Because if you look at an aerial photograph of the area I live in, the solid rain-forest looks like broccoli from horizon to horizon north, south, east and west.
I didn't mean to direct this post only to you. If your kids aren't into, then I don't know what to tell you. I guess I was lucky. Our family outings were to my grandmother's house to play with my cousins or out to dinner once in a blue moon. We didn't have a lot of money to do things other than that. We went out on the boat a lot. In the winter we'd make cookies and stuff and just hang out at the house.

I live in Hollywood. My point was that the new housing being built isn't neighborhoods, it's "development."

Live in Waldorf; have 9 and 15 yr. old. These would make tons of money and are badly needed! We have enough people around here to support it and if I had the money I'd do it.
1. Some decent putt putt places. Kids need somewhere for a date, fun etc.
2. Indoor and outdoor public pool. Went to Cove Point NICE!!! How about Waldorf?
3. Indoor paintball!!! Tire of going to Bowie OA.
4. Indoor Roller Skating!!
5. Indoor sports arena with batting cages, etc. where teams and kids can practice even when the weathers bad.
6. ANOTHER Bowling alley for Waldorf. Miss the one on Post Office road and it didn't cost an arm and leg like the other one.
....sure to come up with some more.

Listen!

I didn't mean to be rude at all. I was just giving my 2 cents. An opinion is an opinion. I respect yours and I wish you would respect mine. I haven't read all of the replies on here...but I have read most. I don't spend time on base. I hate the base....and I don't live near or in it. I don't go to anything on base. I try not to affiliate myself with the so called "military trash" and yes I have seen quite a few. I have talked with some very nice people on base....both military and non...which have helped me. Dunno what there is to do in the community. I used to work at a Botanical Garden back home. I wish there were more things to do and places to go within a short distance. For someone who has lived where there is nothing but conveinence around them to go to a place...be transferred through the military where you have to travel an hour to the mall..yeah it is a culture shock. I think Maryland is beatiful. I love Solomon's Island because it is as close to the beach as you are going to get! I like going to the outdoor flea market...just to look and see because I never had anything like that back home. I like going to the fresh produce stands...that are few and far between back home in Virginia Beach. I tried to look for the good when I got here..unfortunately I didn't know much about the area before my fiancee and I moved..and found out that St. Mary's Landing apt. complex was not the best place to stay. I got a really bad opinion just because of that place. Most of lexington park is run down....there is a liquor store on every street corner. Its kinda sad looking around there. I am now in a much better area in California. I just wish there were things closer to me that my family and I could go out and do. Going to the apt. pool gets boring....when you have a whiney 14 month in the car driving to waldorf isn't my idea of fun. No place to take my daughter...like a Gymboree....all there is...the clothing store....? Not much for young children to do. Its all so different and has been ever since I got here. I tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt but its not working for me anymore.

I have to admit, when I first moved here I thought the same thing. However, shortly there after I met some people, started making friends and got involved in the community. Since then this place has grown on me and I enjoy it. I have a great circle of friends and Im very lucky my son has a safe enviornment to grow up in. Oh yeah, I met my wife here :huggy: who is a local girl....

I couldnt think of living anywhere else.

:yeahthat: I have to agree. I'm not indigenous to this area either but realized I could either be miserable or go out and meet people and give it a whirl. I wasn't wild about the activities but figured if you can't beat them, join them and I did. I started hanging out at bars and shooting pool… it just wasn't yuppie pool at 50.00 an hour tables. It was with real working man kind of people (the kind of love), starting getting into boating, fishing and crabbing, even raised a few chickens, ducks, rabbits and goats and learned to drive a lawn tractor and how to be neighborly and kind to people. Family thought CityGirlDems had lost her marbles but truth is, I think I actually found them here in SoMd. Having experienced the best of both worlds, there's no way in heck I'd ever move back to the city. I still commute for work but that’s it – enough to see everyday the difference of both worlds and I still will always choose SoMd. Personally, I'd prefer it at this point for southern Maryland to be more rural than what it is. Or go back to the way it was about 16 years ago when I moved there as a young adult… but all in all once you get used to the way of life down there, just be open-minded and expand your horizons. SoMd will come to grow on you. :huggy: BTW, welcome to the forums !!!:huggy:

Thank you. It pisses me off when people complain. I'm now faced with the fact that if I want my kids to grow up like I did, I will have to move away from the only place I've known and all my family. 23 years, down the crapper. Because the navy wives want a Super Walmart.

We had Jamesway, Kmart in the park and a Safeway. Everything else was pretty much Mom and Pop. We survived. Thrived even.
I wondered why your a fool you haven't even left this hell hole

I can't believe I'm labeled a fool because I don't want to leave my home.

Not complaining just giving my opinion. Haha its kinda funny...I could never see myself on a tractor...however I have gone atv-ing when I was little with my family down in North Carolina..they are really south and proud of it! I consider this place north but it seems people around here don't think so. It's pretty wild to see Amish people in their horse-drawn carts...while driving down the road. I haven't seen that since I was a kid on vacation in PA....wow...yeah this place..is different....:)

A lot of us ended up here either from the military or a job change. I've seen So. Md. go from very little to too much. Since I now call this home, I have to take the good with the bad.

You aren't a fool, fool. :flowers:

Whats wrong with wanting something to do besides getting drunk and eating out all the time? Whats wrong with wanting something for kids to do besides teen drinking and drugs?

Yes..see  I'd rather see horse and buggy Amish people over the cop cars anyday. I'd rather hear the tractors in the field over sirens any day. See, you'll get used to it. First thing you have to do is - learn to be nice to people. Fake it until ya' make it. I know the City its a completely different mentality, but just keep trying. That's just the way folks try to treat each other down here... we try to be courteous and respectful of others.
