I was kidnapped by my runaway electric car: Terrified motorist, 53, reveals his new £30,000 MG ZS EV 'began driving itself' after suffering 'catastrophic malfunction' - forcing him to dial 999 and crash it into a police van to get it to stop

A terrified electric car driver has revealed he was kidnapped by his runaway £30,000 MG ZS EV after the vehicle suffered a 'catastrophic malfunction' in a bizarre case which forced him to dodge red lights and roundabouts before calling police to ram it into their van.

Brian Morrison, 53, claims he was heading home from work at around 10pm on Sunday when his new Chinese-made fully electric car began driving itself at 30mph.

Unable to use the brakes, the Glaswegian - who runs his own social enterprise - called police who stopped the vehicle by allowing it to slowly crash into their van.

Even with a hybrid MPG goes down quite a bit, however this can be mitigated somewhat. Mine has NiMH batteries , Toyota switched some to Lithium, but if I remember correctly the ones destined for Canada are still Nickel Metal because it performs better in the cold.

Some of the mitigation is don't turn on the heat until the ICE warms up naturally and the biggest is to park in the garage overnight.

Batteries just don't work that efficiently when cold, Lithium are particularly susceptible to cold weather performance issues.

Also, using a heat pump instead of resistive heating elements helps a lot.

So, I do love the yellow journalism. "Driving itself" when its was supposedly unintended acceleration, combined with brake failure, and also a failure of the drive selector. Thats a lot to go wrong........Even for a PingPong Motors special.

I think this is the real key to the story

the Glaswegian - who runs his own social enterprise

And the car told me before the crash "These are Brexit roads!!!"

The regular hybrid uses engine heat, thats the reason to leave the heat off until the engine heats up naturally, which isn't very long. For short trips such as my commute in the morning that makes the difference between 30 MPG and 40 MPG. The plug in hybrid uses a heat pump. I think I remember seeing that the ones sold in the Canadian market also have a resistive heater in them.

Fewer sales not so good, but understanding why matters. And temporary loss of sales due to temporary conditions is just that, temporary. Article even mentions that a) Once Highland goes on sale, those numbers should pick back up. and b) The previous year numbers were skewed by an expiring subsidy that drove higher than normal sales.

Part of the reason sales cratered in Germany and the UK last month can be chalked up to buyers delaying their purchase after the Model 3 received a facelift, dubbed “Highland”.

At six-and-a-half years old now reaching an age where most cars are due for replacement, Tesla's entry sedan received some touch-ups to give it a fresher look and EV customers likely held off in anticipation.

This temporary lull should then turn into tailwinds once the vehicle is available in larger numbers as Tesla’s Shanghai plant in China ramps up production and exports.

The shocking drop of nearly 80% year on year in Germany is also mitigated somewhat by a high comparison figure from December 2022, when customers were still rushing to take advantage of government subsidies worth as much as €6,000 per car before they were cut to €4,500 at the start of 2023.

As for the production stop, that's evidently common in Europe around the holidays. And the linked article, once you translate from the German, says that Gigs Shanhai is still supplying Europe as well, and those cars cost less to produce and ship than the GErman ones, evidently.

It kills me how some people think Musk is a "right wing nutjob". I think Europe would probably equate him to Trump. I can't see how this sort of thing doesn't affect sales, especially in Europe. I bet he is forced out some day.

I mean they sold 1.8 million cars last year. They're on track to sell more than 2 million this year. Like so many things, the outrage over his personal positions, while it's real to some folks really doesn't matter to the vast majority of people buying cars.

Pretty lofty statement for something that only has 1.2% market penetration in the U.S. and that's the total of EVs and Hybrids. LOL

Not sure you want to count jokes as "statements". :)

Assuming by "market penetration", you mean market share, I think you are confusing the 1.3 million sold with the 9% market share.
